Bias Incident Response Team

Seattle Central College has created a set of protocols to attend to the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff; to respond to individual complaints or grievances; and to adjudicate possible violations of college policies and local, state, or federal laws.

The Bias Incident Response Team (BIRST) is charged with reviewing reports of bias incidents and recommending actions. It is composed of:

  • Associate Vice President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Coordinator, convener
  • Vice President of Student Services, Vice Coordinator, back-up convener
  • Vice President for Administrative Services
  • Vice President of Instruction or Designee
  • Director for Human Resources and Compliance
  • Director of Safety and Security
  • Chief Communications Officer

Depending on the nature of the incident, the coordinator may invite other departments to participate (e.g. Disability Resource Center).

How to report a bias incident

Any person, including Seattle Central College students, faculty, staff, and visitors, who witnesses, becomes aware of, or is subject to bias-based expression should immediately report the incident.
