Overview:

The world languages program at Seattle Central provides the opportunity for students intending to transfer to a four– [this is a dash instead of a hyphen]year college or university as well as community members to begin study of languages and cultures. World language courses address speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing.

Cultural study emphasizes the naturally global and multicultural perspectives inherent in the study of world languages. Students who continue their language studies are well- [no hyphen here is better, I think] prepared when they transfer to destination institutions. Many students also decide to volunteer, travel or work in countries where the language is spoken and find that they are able to communicate successfully.

Pathway Description:

Seattle Central College currently offers courses in American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Students who hope to transfer at the junior level to a linguistics or specific World Languages program at a college or university should plan to complete two years of a language prior to transfer. Seattle Central currently offers the complete two-year course sequence in French. Students who choose other languages should plan to take an intensive second-year language program prior to transfer in order to begin at the junior level. The other world language courses offer first year courses that will also be transferrable to most colleges and universities as world language credit.

Completion of a BA in world languages or linguistics or other relevant degree-granting programs such as ASL interpretation opens doors to a variety of careers in sectors including non-profit, healthcare, international business, government, entertainment, law and education.
