Corequisite Math Courses FAQ

Co-requisite math courses are courses taken concurrently in the same quarter, which includes a 3-credit pre-college level course (for example, MATH 046) and a 5-credit college level math course (for example, MATH&146), for a total of 8 credits.

The corequisite courses will typically cover pre-college level math topics (such as percenteges, variables, formulas, equations) that are necessary for success in the paired college-level course. The corequisite courses will also teach study skills and mindsets for success in college math.

Students will sign up for the 5-credit college course, plus the 3-credit support course, concurrently. Most of the time, you will have the same teacher and classmates in both courses, so it will seem more like a single 8-credit course. This is a about half of a full-time student's load. Be prepared to work hard, but keep in mind, you'll be done in one quarter!

Also, the class size is 24, which is lower than most college courses. This will give you a chance to get to know your classmates and teacher better, and give your teacher more time with each student.

If you place into level 2 (algebra) or 3 (intermediate algebra) on the directed self-placement, then you most likely would benefit from taking a corequisite course.

Yes. STEM majors typically start in Math 098 (Intermediate Algebra) or Math 141 (Precalculus 1). There are corequisites available for both:

  • Math 098 + Math 038
  • Math& 141 + Math 041

Yes. Business majors typically start in Math 116 Applications of Math in Management, Life and Social Sciences. You have the option to take this course with a corequisite:

  • Math 116 + Math 067

Yes. Math& 146 + Math 046

Yes. We offer Math 107: Math and Society. You have the option to take this with a corequisite:

  • Math& 107 + Math 067

No. Corequisite courses are designed to support the college level course and must be taken concurrently with the college level course. For example, sign up for Math& 146 (Statistics) and Math 046 in the same quarter.

Yes. If you place high enough on the directed self-placement (for example, level 3 for Math&146) then you can take the college level course that is not paired with a corequisite course. However, you may not enroll in a college level courses that is intentionally paired with a corequisite course.

Yes. The corequisite courses are designed to support you to succeed in math, even if you have failed previous math courses.

The college-level math course plus the support course is 8 credits total. That is roughly half the normal load for a full-time student. It will be a lot of work, but keep in mind that you will be finished in one quarter!

The corequisite course is specifically designed to support the college level course. Because the corequisite course focuses on specific math concepts shortly before you use them in the college level course, taking both in the same quarter will help you be more successful in these courses. You will also learn study skills and ways to cope with math anxiety in the corequisite course as well.

Also, the courses have a lower class size, only 24 students. In addition, you will most likley have the same teacher and classmates in the corequisite course and the college course.

The corequisite course is specifically designed to support you as you take the college level course. Your teacher and classmates are a built-in support for you. If you need additional help, free tutoring is available in the Science and Math tutoring center, both in-person and on Zoom. Click here for more information. Also, your instructor will have office hours available to help you better understand core math concepts covered in the course.

Go to the class schedule and choose the class that best fits your schedule. The corequisite class you need will be listed in "MATH" and the college course will be listed in "MATH" or "MATH (CCN)" (CCN is common course numbering, meaning the numbers are the same for all community colleges in Washington State).

As you read the description for the class, you will see whether the course is linked with another course. For example, each section of MATH 046 will be paired with a specific section of MATH& 146. Add both sections to your "shopping cart".

You will earn a decimal grade (0.0-4.0) in the college course. The grade for the corequisite course is "S" (satisfactory, in other words, "pass") or "U" (unsatisfactory, in other words, "fail"). If you get at least 2.0 in the college course then you automatically earn an S in the corequisite course.

The two grades will appear separately on your transcript

If you get at least 2.0 in the college course then you automatically earn an S (satisfactory) in the corequisite course. If you earn less than 2.0 in the college course, you might still pass the corequisite course, depending on the instructor's grading policies.

If you fail the college course but pass the corequisite course, you may retake the college course by itself. Or, if you wish, take both again.

No. The two courses are designed to be taken concurrently

Yes. Corequisite coureses are taken in conjunction with college level math courses that are necessary for a degree, so financial aid covers them. Certain types of financial aid might have additional restrictions. Please contact the Financial Aid office for clarification.

Yes, provided the corequisite course is an in-person course. The GI Bill has different rules for math courses below 100 (for example, MATH 046) and only pays for these courses if they are on-campus and face-to-face (labeled "In Person" under the instruction mode on the Class Schedule). However, the college-level course that is paired with the corequisite course is covered, regardless of modality.

For example, if you take Math 146 as a hybrid course (meeting on-campus twice per week, online for the other days) and Math 046 as In Person, then the GI Bill pays for both.

For another example, if you take Math 146 online and Math 046 online, the GI Bill pays for Math 146 but not Math 046.

Most quarters, we will offer at least one in-person section of:

  • Math 046: Support for Math 146 (Statistics)
  • Math 041: Support for Math 141 (Pre-calculus 1)
  • Math 038: Support for Math 098 (Intermediate Algebra)

Unfortunately, we usually will only have online sections for Math 067: Suppport for Math 107 and Math 116

Running Start only pays for college level courses (100 level and higher). If you enroll in a corequisite course, you will have to find alternate funding.
