BeyondLabz

BeyondLabz is a lab simulation software incorporated in Chemistry lab courses at Seattle Central. To find out if BeyondLabz is used in a course, refer to course syllabi, course Canvas pages, and or to the Textbook/Materials section of course pages found through the Class Search. If you have additional questions, please contact the instructor.

System Requirements

BeyondLabz requires download and installation on Chromebook, Mac, or Windows.

Accessing BeyondLabz

To use BeyondLabz you will have to download and install software on your device OR access BeyondLabz remotely on lab computers. Your instructor must also provide you with an activation code for the software license. The method used to provide this code will vary and therefore you must pay close attention to directions you receive from your instructor.

There are slightly different procedures for different operating systems. Please note if you are using a Chromebook AND previously activated a free online trial, you must activate your license before your free online trial expires (often after 5 days). Not doing so may prevent you from activating with the college license.

Installation Guide – Mac and Windows

  1. Register for an Account
    • Go to the BeyondLabz Portal at https://portal.beyondlabz.com
    • At the login screen, click on “Register” to create an account.
    • Provide a valid email address, a nickname, and a password.
    • Click “Register” to finalize the account creation.
  2. Download and Install BeyondLabz Connect
    • Open BeyondLabz Connect
    • In “Installation and Setup” click on “License”. Alternatively, click on the profile icon in the upper right corner and select “License Manager.”
  3. Activate the software license.
    • Enter the activation code given to you by your instructor.
    • If you are an existing user of v1.7 of BeyondLabz, enter the “License Code” found in the “License” tab of the BeyondLabz Client. If you did not already copy the “License Code” from an older version of BeyondLabz, you will need to close the portal page, close BeyondLabz Connect, and then open your v1.7 of BeyondLabz. Once the “License Code” is copied, reopen the portal, and reconnect with BeyondLabz Connect.

Installation Guide – Chromebooks

  1. Enable Google Play Apps
    • Your Chromebook must be enabled to access the Google Play Store and run Android apps.
  2. Download BeyondLabz Application
    • Go to the Google Play Store and search for “BeyondLabz” in the Apps.
    • b. The lab apps from the Play Store do not include the worksheet PDFs. You can get them by registering at the portal website and clicking on the Activities tab. You do not need to download the Connect software- just register, login and you can open the worksheets directly.
    • Depending on your Chromebook screen resolution, you may need to change your display settings to make the app more easily visible.
  3. Activate
    • The labs will work for 5 days for free.
    • After 5 days an activation code is required. Use the activation code provided by your instructor before the free trial ends.
    • Enter or copy and paste the code into the “Activation” tab in the client.
    • If you need to activate multiple labs, please contact support@beyondlabz.com. They can adjust your activation code so it will work in more than one app.

Remotely Access BeyondLabz on Lab Computers

You can also remotely access BeyondLabz on some campus computers as BeyondLabz had been installed on specific Science & Mathematics (SAM) computers. Please be aware, you will still need to register for an account and activate your license to remotely run BeyondLabz Connect on campus computers.

Connecting Remotely to Lab Computers

  1. Install and run a desktop client application. There are different procedures for different operating systems.
    • Chromebook: Sign into your Chromebook first with your google account. Go the Google Play Store and download the client.
    • Mac: Go to the iTunes Store and download the client.
    • Windows: No steps needed as Windows PCs already have a client installed.
  2. From a web browser, go to one of the remote access landing pages below (these are rooms/computers where BeyondLabz have been installed):
  3. Choose a computer station and click on the “Connect” button to the right of it.
  4. Click download in the next window
  5. Choose to open or run the downloaded .rdp file. Exact steps will depend on your operating system.
  6. Click “Connect” or “Yes” on any windows indicating publisher and computer cannot be identified, as they pop up.
  7. When asked to Enter your credentials, login with your full MySeattleColleges username (e.g., first.last@seattlecolleges.edu) and password.
  8. The remote desktop will begin. Please note this may take a few minutes. Once completed you may also want to change resolution and “fit to window”.
  9. Do not forget to Log off at the end of your session. This can be found in the start menu on the bottom left corner of the screen. Click on your ID button and SIGN OUT.

My activation code is not working. How do I activate my software license?

Activation codes are like passwords. Ensure you have entered characters in the correct order and case (turn off Caps lock). Contact your instructor AND Lab Technician, Christian Kinlin christian.kinlin@seattlecolleges.edu, if access is still not granted.

Gizmos

Gizmos is an online simulation platform incorporated in Chemistry lab courses at Seattle Central College. To find out if Gizmos is used in a course, refer to course syllabi, course Canvas pages, and or to the Textbook/Materials section of course pages found through the Class Search. System Requirements

Gizmos run on any browser or device (PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, iPads, and Android devices). For the best experience, it is recommended that you use the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.

Accessing Gizmos

Gizmo simulations will be accessed through Canvas. Your instructor will send you an invite link/URL via email or by posting it online on a syllabus or course webpage. This may vary by instructor and therefore you must pay close attention to the directions you receive from your instructor.

Google Earth Pro (Desktop Version)

Goggle Earth is an interactive mapping software incorporated in Geology courses at Seattle Central College. System Requirements

Google Earth Pro is available on Linux, Mac, or PC, and requires download and installation.

Accessing Google Earth Pro

To access Google Earth Pro you will need to download Google Earth Pro to your desktop OR access Google Earth Pro remotely on campus lab computers. Please note not all versions of Google Earth have the same features. Geology courses typically use Google Earth Pro.

Download Google Earth Pro to Desktop

  1. Go to https://www.google.com/earth/versions/
  2. Scroll down to the “Create maps with advance tools” section
  3. Click “Download Earth Pro on desktop”
  4. A download window will appear. Click “Accept & Download”

Remotely Access Google Earth Pro on Lab Computers

Alternatively, you may also access Google Earth Pro by remotely accessing a campus lab computer. To do this you will need to connect to campus computers by following the Helpdesk's directions: https://itservices.seattlecolleges.edu/access-computer-labs-campus

The major steps are summarized below. Please note MAC and Chromebook users have additional steps.

  1. In a web browser, go to your campus remote access landing page.
  2. Select a SAM computer lab (only lab computers will have lab software).
  3. Choose a computer in the lab to use.
  4. Download the connection file.
  5. Connect to the lab computer.
  6. Launch Google Earth Pro from the windows start menu.

Labster

Labster is a lab simulation platform incorporated in Biology lab courses at Seattle Central College. To confirm if Labster is used in a course, refer to course syllabi, course Canvas pages, and or to the Textbook/Materials section of course pages found through the Class Search. System Requirements

Labster runs directly in the browser of Chromebooks, desktop computers, or laptops with the minimum system requirements below. Because simulations run through web browsers, internet speeds may affect the time it takes to load a simulation. Please note, Labster is not yet compatible with mobile devices.

  • Processor: Dual core 2 GHz or higher
  • Memory: 4 GB or more
  • Graphic card: Intel HD 3000 / GeForce 6800 GT / Radeon X700 or higher
  • OS: Latest version of Windows (64-bit) or Mac OS or Chrome OS
  • Supported browsers: Latest versions of Firefox and Chrome.

Accessing Labster

To get started with Labster simulations you will gain access through Canvas and do NOT need to create a Labster account. Your instructor will send you an invite link/URL via email or by posting it online on a syllabus or course webpage. This will vary by instructor and therefore you must pay close attention to the directions you receive from your instructor.

Pivot Interactives

Pivot Interactives is an online lab activity platform incorporated in Physics lab courses at Seattle Central College. To confirm if Pivot is used in a course, refer to course syllabi, course Canvas pages, and or to the Textbook/Materials section of course pages found through the Class Search. If you have additional questions, please contact the instructor.

System Requirements

Pivot Interactives is browser-based and runs on computers, tablets, or mobile devices with an internet connection. Preferred browsers include Mozilla Firefox, version 83 or later, Google Chrome, version 85 or later, Apple Safari, version 14 or later.

Accessing Pivot Interactives

To use this software, you must receive an email invitation from your instructor. Once you receive the invitation, follow the steps below or follow this video.

  1. Click on the join link provided by your instructor (this will open a confirmation page)
  2. Verify the class and instructor name are correct
  3. Click “Confirm” to join the class
  4. Create an account by completing the sign-up page OR click “Log in” if you already have a Pivot Interactives account.

Vernier Video Analysis

Vernier Video Analysis is a video analysis web app incorporated in Physics lab courses at Seattle Central College. To confirm if Vernier Video Analysis is used in a course, refer to course syllabi, course Canvas pages, and or to the Textbook/Materials section of course pages found through the Class Search. If you have additional questions, please contact the instructor.

System Requirements

Video Analysis runs in the most current versions (or one version older) of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge browsers. Internet Explorer is not supported, as of April 8, 2020. Video Analysis is compatible with Macs, Windows, Chromebooks, and Android operating systems, and works on devices including iPads and iPhones.

A device must have internet access to activate these apps, but it does not have to be continuously online to use the app. It can be used offline if the app has been used while online in the previous two weeks.

Accessing Vernier Video Analysis

To start using Vernier Video Analysis you will need to access the web app.

  1. Your instructor will send you an invite link/URL via email or Canvas.
  2. Click on the link (a Vernier Video Analysis activation window will open in your preferred browser).
  3. The app will prompt you to enter a license key but should be automatically entered (through invite link).
  4. Click Activate.
  5. A welcome window will open, and you may start using Vernier Video Analysis.
