Formal Complaint

The purpose of filing a formal complaint with the student complaints officer is to provide due process to both parties in the solution of a problem or complaint that a student has been unable to resolve or settle informally. The complaints officer will guide the student through all of the appropriate steps.

The steps and the timeline in the formal complaints process will vary somewhat depending on the situation.

Formal complaints must be addressed, in writing, to the campus complaints officer. Meet with the complaints officer to discuss the matter prior to writing your letter. Your written complaint should be clear and well organized, with the situation explained in detail and all supporting materials and documentation included.

If the written response does not resolve the complaint, the student can request a conference with those named in the complaint. The complaints officer will call the parties together for a conference where they can talk face to face in an atmosphere of fairness and cooperative problem-solving. The student may bring an advocate.
