Rules for Synchronous Sessions

You may have read about the chaos that can occur in live sessions that have no structure. For this reason, I like to provide a well-structured environment that balances facilitator control and attendee participation. To do this, I have a few guidelines that I'm going to ask each of you to follow before and during the session:

  1. HAVE FUN! We're here to learn. That doesn't mean we can't have fun doing it. Your attitude about this experience will dramatically contribute to your success. I promise, to bring my positive attitude and enthusiasm every time and hope you will to.

  2. Please login at least one day before the live session to make sure your computer setup works and get the necessary technical support if it doesn't (see setup above).

  3. Arrive at the session approximately 10 - 15 minutes early if possible. I recommend logging in from a location where there are a minimum number of distractions such as noise, people, etc. One suggestion is to make a sign that informs those around you that you are in class and unavailable. For example, "Online Class In Session! Please Do Not Interrupt. Thank You!"

  4. If you have technical difficulties when logging in, try three times. If after three attempts, you are unable to connect, don't sweat it. Simply send Terry a quick email. Take that opportunity to spend time with family and friends -- we'll work it out later, promise, Once the problem is resolved, you can watch the recorded archive and be prepared for the next time.

  5. As tempting as it can be, it's recommended that you close all other browser windows and applications (e.g., email, games, work, etc.) so that your focus can be on our session.

  6. Some sessions might offer activities for you to choose from and some freedom to "play" with the drawing tools, etc. before the session starts. Use that opportunity to have fun and explore the tools. Don't stress if you can't get something to work. Part of the session will be to show you how to interact with me, each other, and the web conferencing tool.

  7. Once the session begins, please wait for prompting during specific activities to use whiteboard tools. All participants can see when you draw or type on the whiteboard, which can distract from the session's academic content.

  8. Please use your microphone and webcam only when prompted by me. This helps us reduce possible chaos that can ensue when participants are talking over each other, etc.

  9. Our Web Conferencing tool allows participants to chat semi-privately with one another. These chats are visible to the moderators and can be distracting at times. Therefore, please keep private chats to a minimum unless discussing session content.

  10. If you have a question during the session, please do one of the following:
  • To use the microphone: Raise your hand and wait to be called on.

  • To use the chat box: When prompted by me, raise your hand to indicate you have a question. Type your question into the chat box, but do not press Enter. When I call your name, press the Enter so that your question displays in the chat box for everyone to see. This controls the number of questions that appear at once.
