First Generation Celebration

You're invited to join Seattle Central's first-generation celebration on November 6 and 7, 2024. Please feel free to attend any or all of the events, but make sure to RSVP if you would like lunch.

What is the Celebration

The First-Generation Celebration began with an initiative from then-President Lyndon B. Johnson, who in 1965, officially recognized November 8 as a day to honor the achievements of first-generation college students. This recognition stemmed from a broader effort to highlight the unique challenges faced by these students and to provide them with the support they need to succeed.

The presidential proclamation inspired educational institutions across the country to celebrate and support first-generation students, leading to the establishment of dedicated events on college campuses. These celebrations now serve as an opportunity for institutions to acknowledge the perseverance and accomplishments of first-generation students, fostering a supportive community and reinforcing the commitment to educational access and equity.
