CARES Act
Federal CARES Act & HEERF Funds
In March 2020, the federal government passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) which is a $2.2 trillion economic stimulus bill passed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Seattle Central College received Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) under the CARES Act and began awarding funds to students that met the following criteria:
- Have a valid FAFSA
- Have a valid Social Security Number
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Not in repayment status for Title IV funds
- Are a US Citizen or permanent resident
- Pursing a Title IV eligible program and enrolled in at least 1 credit
In 2023, Seattle Central College began dispersing its remaining HEERF funds to the following students:
- February 2023: all eligible students carrying a tuition balance and currently enrolled in winter quarter 2023
- March 2023: all eligible students carrying a tuition balance from fall quarter 2021 until fall quarter 2022 and are no longer enrolled at the college
- June 2023: a final payment of $600 issued to all eligible students
The goal of the remaining HEERF funds are to remove financial barriers for current and formerly enrolled students by paying off any outstanding student debt and supporting students to re-enroll by connecting them to a re-engagement specialist.
