Communication
General Outcome
Students completing a Communication (C) course, in fulfillment of the Communication requirement, will be better prepared for more effective in-person and / or media-based interactions with individuals and within groups.Student Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:- choose, organize, and develop in-person and/or media-based modalities and material for presenting ideas and for working with individuals and within groups;
- engage critically and constructively in exchanging ideas, keeping discussions and presentations relevant and focused;
- adapt communication styles and media formats to the contexts in which specific interactions and presentations occur;
- recognize nonverbal, verbal, and media communication reflecting diverse perspectives on culture, ethnicity, age, gender, and/or sexual orientation;
- identify and practice different norms and roles that facilitate human interaction;
- understand and implement appropriate methods for making decisions and solving problems.
Suggested Curriculum Considerations
Components for all Communication/C courses will facilitate an understanding of how communication is important within the specific discipline.For students to achieve the prescribed General Education Outcomes and gain valuable experiences, it is expected that a pragmatic balance of individual and group work will be used within each course to fulfill one or more of the following activities:
- explore texts, online, periodical, and other research material without instructor guidance;
- research, prepare, and present a discipline-specific aspect of the course to classmates and instructor; produce an analytical or creative project on a student chosen topic germane to the course and discipline.
- discipline specific objectives for studying communication and acquiring applicable knowledge and skills through individual and group work;
- considerations and suggestions for building interpersonal trust and empathy;
- considerations and suggestions for listening actively;
- considerations and suggestions for coordinating group roles and tasks;
- considerations and suggestions for making decisions and solving problems;
- considerations and suggestions for managing disagreements and resolving conflicts;
- discipline specific perspectives for reflecting upon what these principles and processes mean to individual students.
