ACCIDENT REPORTS
Any student, staff, or visitor injured on campus must submit an accident report as soon as possible, regardless of the severity of the injury. This may be done at the Department of Safety and Security, room BE1131.
  • Accident – applies to any personal injury. Accident reports are not required for illness on campus unless injuries result (e.g. a seizure causes the person to fall and strike an object.)
  • Students/Visitors – If the injury occurs to a student or visitor on the campus, an accident report should be submitted, but any medical expenses incurred must be paid for by the individual or their personal health insurance. If a student does not have insurance, they may contact the Student Leadership Office about medical and hospitalization insurance available to SCCC students enrolled for six credit hours or more per quarter. Go to room SAC 350 or call 587-6924 for rates or other information.
  • Employee – An accident occurring to an employee or a work study student during their working hours is covered by Washington State Industrial Insurance. An injured employee who requires medical attention must advise the physician or hospital of this coverage immediately so they may initiate an industrial insurance form. The health care provider will then forward this form to the employer. At SCCC, the Department of Safety and Security receives and completes these reports on behalf of the college and forwards the finalized copies to the Department of Labor and Industries in Olympia. Any verbal or written communications received by an divisional office with regards to an injured employee(s) should be immediately submitted to the Department of Safety and Security.

EMERGENCIES
The Safety and Security Office in room BE1131 is open from 7:30 a.m.‑4:30 p.m. Their phone number is (206) 587‑5442. After 4:30 p.m. call (206) 587‑5448. An emergency information sheet is posted in most classrooms and available in the office. In the event of an emergency, the Safety and Security Office can be reached by pressing the red button on any of the public telephones located on campus.

Medical Emergencies: For minor injuries or illness, report to Safety and Security Office (x5442) in room BE1131.

  • If the person is seriously injured, do not move them unless there is a life-threatening danger (e.g. falling debris, fire, explosion).
  • In a life-threatening emergency, immediately dial 911, and request medical aid.
    • State the nature of the problem
    • Give your address (1701 Broadway) and location in the building
    • Calmly and carefully provide the information requested by the 911 operator
    • Do not hang up until told to do so
  • When you complete the 911 call, immediately notify the Department of Safety and Security at 587-5442, as they will need to meet the medical unit and guide them to the scene.
    • State the nature of the problem, the location and that you have already notified 911.
    • Provide as much information as possible about the illness or injury.
  • Let the victim know help is on the way and keep them as calm and comfortable as possible. If you are first aid trained and feel it is needed, administer first aid.

  • Victim should be asked to complete and submit an accident report (See Accident Reports) with the Department of Safety and Security upon their return.

EVACUATION
In the event of an emergency that requires evacuation, all persons should observe the following evacuation procedures:
  • All persons shall move toward the nearest marked exit. Wheelchair occupants or persons with mobility impairment have first priority for the building elevators, but elevators should never be used in a fire or earthquake.
    • Time permitting, take briefcases, purses, backpacks, and jackets with you.
    • Also, close classroom doors, lock file cabinets and office doors as you calmly move to the nearest exit
  • Verbal Notice to Evacuate: when a verbal evacuation order is given, do not hinder or delay the Safety/Security Officer or designee making the announcement with arguments or numerous questions about the incident. As soon as time permits, you will be fully briefed as to the nature of the emergency. For your safety, calmly comply with the directions given.
  • Nearest Exit: An evacuation map is located in each classroom in the Broadway-Edison Building that will direct you to the nearest emergency exit. Make sure you and your students are aware of it BEFORE an evacuation. In the Science and Math Building, stairwells and elevators are located on the North and South sides of the building.
  • Evacuation of Mobility Impaired Persons: During an evacuation or other emergency, students, staff, and visitors with disabilities may require special assistance from instructors, students, and/or college staff. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to prepare for emergencies ahead of time by discussing their needs with appropriate personnel (i.e. instructor, classmates, staff).
    • Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to file an emergency status form with the office of Disability Support Services (587-4183 v/tty, room 1147 in the BE Building, info at (seattlecentral.edu/dept/accommodate.php).

GRADING
Acrobat Reader SCCC Faculty Handbook Page 26
Electronic Grading: Seattle Central Community College uses the numerical grading system. Please refer to the District catalog for an explanation of all types of grades (Alpha and Numeric). Grades must be recorded for all students. An email from the college will be sent out each quarter identifying the submission deadline. The Division Office will need an electronic copy of your website grades for our files, by the due date for grades. Please be sure to provide us with this information, which should include student ID numbers.

Don’t Hand In Grades Late: Every quarter an email will be sent out with the deadline for grade submission. The system is set to stop accepting grades exactly at the time of day posted. Even though you can still ‘submit’ grades afterwards these grades are not posted. If you are late then you must come into the Division office and fill out a “Change-of-Grade” form for every student who did not receive a grade. Additionally students on financial aid may receive their funding late if grades are not posted for them from the previous quarter. Please contact the Division office if you have a problem handing grades in on time.

Incompletes: An “I" indicates the student performed at a passing level, completed most of the course requirements and intends to make up the missing work. An "I" is given at the discretion of the instructor when the student has attended regularly, done satisfactory work and provided satisfactory proof that the work cannot be completed because of illness or other circumstances beyond the student's control. Coursework must be completed during the following quarter, excluding summer quarter. If the student fails to remove the "I” by completing the coursework in the specified time period, the "I" remains on the transcript. If the student elects to repeat a course rather than make up the work, the "I" will remain on the transcript. The grade earned will compute in the GPA; after receiving an "I” in a course, a student may repeat that course only once.

“NC” / No Credit: "No Credit" indicates the student and the instructor agree the student will receive no credit for the course. A student in good standing may request a "NC" from the instructor prior to the final examination, granted at the instructor's discretion. After a "NC" is issued, the course may be repeated only once without the Dean’s permission. A "NC" does not affect a student's GPA.

Posting of Grades: The public posting of grades either by the student’s name, institution, student identification number or SID# without student’s written permission is a violation of the FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) guidelines. Even with names obscured, numeric student identifier numbers are considered personally identifiable information. Therefore, the practice of posting grades by social security numbers or personal identifiable numbers violates a student’s legal right to privacy. Instructors and others who post grades should use a system ensuring student’s privacy. This can be accomplished by using code words or randomly assigned numbers only the instructor and individual student know. The order of posting should also be random.

Students’ final grades are not to be mailed. Students are able to obtain their grades via the Web, Student Online Services, hall and office kiosks or by phone. Students can be notified by mail with prior official institutional notification. Have the student fill out a stamped, self-addressed postcard with the course name on the message side of the card. The completed postcard is given to the instructor who writes the student grade on the message side and mails it to the student when grades have been determined. By completing the postcard, the student is giving consent to have his/her grades mailed. (FERPA GUIDELINE CHAPTER SIX SESSION 6.16)
