Marine Carpentry

AAS-T, Certificate

The Marine Carpentry program is a six-quarter program designed to prepare students for employment in boat building, boat repair or a related trade. Students learn lofting and layout, fiberglass lay-up and repair, spray gun techniques, wood boat construction and repair, and interior and exterior joinery.

The curriculum is designed to provide practical hands-on education. Students learn the craft by working on assigned boat projects. The class/shop atmosphere is similar to an actual boat building shop. Class sizes vary from 16-18 students for each instructor. The Marine Carpentry class has been offered since 1936 as a program of Edison Technical School, which became part of Seattle Central in 1967.

Career Opportunities

Jobs are available in custom and commercial boat building shops and repair yards in the Seattle area. Job skills required for employees vary from yard to yard depending on the size of the work force. Skills learned in the Marine Carpentry program can be applied to many other areas of work including finish carpentry, cabinetmaking, and millwork.

  • Program Specialty Students must decide on a program specialty (carpentry, marine carpentry, or cabinetmaking) prior to enrolling in Introductory Wood Construction, WCO 110.
  • Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event of exceptionally high demand for the program, the Wood Construction Center office maintains waiting lists for the carpentry, marine carpentry and cabinetmaking programs. Students already enrolled in one program do not have priority to enroll in another program ahead of students already on the waiting list. Because all programs run concurrently, students may only enroll in one program during any given quarter.
  • Questions about enrollment and registration should be directed to the Wood Construction Center office at 206 587-5460 or to the Professional Technical Education counselor at 206 344-4483.
