Choosing a Topic

Choose a topic that:

  • Meets the requirements and scope of the assignment
  • Interests you and your reader
  • Can be researched--that is, information is available

Use outside sources to generate ideas, such as:

  • Issues of your local newspaper
  • Books on the libary reference shelves in the relevant subject areas
  • Topic categories in a virtual library on the Web
  • Friends, family members, your instructor, or a librarian
  • SIRS Topic Browse

Write down a few ideas without worrying about what you don't yet know. Review your notes and circle the most interesting ideas, problems, issues, or concepts. Head to the library or to an encyclopedia to get a little more information.
