Choosing a Topic
Choose a topic that:
Meets the requirements and scope of the assignment
Interests you and your reader
Can be researched--that is, information is available
Use outside sources to generate ideas, such as:
Issues of your local newspaper
Books on the libary reference shelves in the relevant subject areas
Topic categories in a virtual library on the Web
Friends, family members, your instructor, or a librarian
SIRS Topic Browse
Write down a few ideas without worrying about what you don't yet know. Review your notes and circle the most interesting ideas, problems, issues, or concepts. Head to the library or to an encyclopedia to get a little more information.
