Periodicals Overview

Periodicals are published regularly: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or otherwise. They provide a wide range of current information and cover all topic areas.

Editors review most periodical literature carefully before it is published, resulting in better quality information than can be found on the Web at large. The three major types are:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Journals or Scholarly Journals

    Most quality periodical content requires a personal or library-provided subscription. Periodicals are available several different ways:

  • Print subscriptions (personal or library)
  • Microfilm or microfiche (in libraries)
  • Electronic Journals on the Web (free or subscription-based)
  • Online Databases (usually provided by libraries)

    Online periodical databases are the most efficient way to identify articles on a specific topic.
