Certificate Programs

The Short-Term Certificate Program offers a range of options for international students planning to study in the United States for a short period of time. Through an exciting menu of college certificate programs, international students can study together with American students, earn college credits, and earn an International Education Programs Certificate of Completion in just 3 months. For those with more time, the programs may all be extended up to 12 months. Students may select an optional Volunteer internship to meet program requirements.

Certificates are available in the following fields:

ESL Certificates

The Institute of English offers certificates for short-term study in English. Please refer to the Institute of English for information on these certificate options.

American Internship Experience(AIE)

Many students in the Short-Term Certificate program also choose to earn the American Internship Experience Certificate. Click here for details.

College Level Certificate Programs

All fields below offer certificates 3 - 12 months in length (3 - 4 quarters), with the exception of Introduction to Computers, which is only 3 months (1 quarter). Under each description below is a link to the curriculum, which includes a short list of required core courses and a longer list of additional courses. To earn a certificate of any length, students must take all required core courses and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours each quarter by selecting from the longer list of additional courses.

One quarter = 8 week Summer Intensive and 11 week fall, winter and spring English requirement: minimum 520 TOEFL

Business and Computing

Business Information Systems

This certificate provides a broad introduction to computers and information systems within the context of business. The program is useful for people who are in the Business or Information Systems fields already and want to update their knowledge. It is also useful for people who wish to gain a foundation for entering those fields. Students will learn how to use spreadsheet and database applications and will practice word processing, especially for business documents. Also included is an introduction to the Internet with experience on how to use
e-mail, World Wide Web, listservs, and other features important for international communication and business. Students will have access to computer laboratories. An optional part-time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program.

Business Administration

This program includes courses in fundamental areas of business administration, providing a foundation for people entering the business and management field and deeper understanding of U.S. business practices and culture. It also benefits the established manager who does not have an academic background in business or wants to prepare for entering an MBA program. Students focus on the areas of Organization and Management, Accounting, economics, and Human Resource Management. An optional part time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program.

MBA Preparation

This program allows students in non-Business fields to take the core Business courses they need to meet graduate school requirements. The curriculum is flexible: since requirements can vary considerably between MBA programs, students may choose to enroll for only those courses that their program requires. MBA programs have many admission requirements, including GMAT or GRE scores, work experience and high TOEFL scores, in addition to holding a recognized Bachelor's degree. Successful completion of the MBA Preparation Certificate will not guarantee acceptance in any specific MBA program, but it will provide course preparation needed to meet the challenge of an MBA degree.

Introduction to Computers

Employers throughout the world are looking for people with a background in computers. There are two certificates: Introduction to Computers and the Computer Studies certificate. Introduction to Computers provides a basic understanding of using the computer and some of its software applications. Participants who are not already proficient in computing should enroll in the Introduction to Computers certificate.

Curriculum is under revision, but students will choose from courses such as HTML And Web Page Development and Introduction to Desktop Publishing.

Computer Studies

The Computer Studies certificate provides a wide range of course options, including Computer Applications, e-mail and Internet skills, Web Design & Technology and Computer Programming. The Computer Studies Certificate requires that participants have basic computer skills: familiarity with using the computer (keyboard, internet, etc.) and knowledge of at least one or more computer applications such as Word, Excel, or Access. Participants will have access to the computer laboratory at the college. An optional part time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program.

Curriculum is under revision, but students will choose from courses such as Computer Operating Systems, Programming Concepts and Fundamentals, Introduction to Computer Hardware, HTML And Web Page Development and Networking Essentials.


Arts Studies

Survey of Fine Arts
Music
Art

These certificates offer three options for students who would like to take courses in the Fine Arts: Survey of Fine Arts, Art or Music. Courses are open to beginning students or to students who already have developed talent in these areas. An optional part time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program. Cultures and Communication

Global Studies

As the world grows more interconnected, an international view of the world becomes increasingly important to compete in the global marketplace. The Global Studies certificate offers participants the opportunity to study a variety of international and intercultural topics, including intercultural communication, social issues, international relations, language and history. Participants who are interested in entering an international field or who work in companies with multi-national companies would be very interested in the Global Studies option. An optional part time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program.

American Studies

The American Studies certificate provides participants with an insight into different aspects of American life. The program will be of interest to participants who want to increase their understanding of the United States, in particular to those who interact regularly with Americans in their home country. Participants will choose from a variety of courses covering history, culture, social issues and communication, and learn how these have shaped modern America. An optional part time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program.

Modern Communication

The Modern Communication certificate allows students to explore different aspects of communication in today's world. The program will be of particular interest for students who are engaged in the work of conveying and sharing information, including teaching, public information, customer service and journalism. Students in the program can examine Communication theory, Technology and Language. An optional part time volunteer internship can be arranged as part of this program.

General Studies

The General Studies certificate allows students to select from a wide variety of classes to tailor their own program. Participants gain experience in the American classroom, improve their English skills, and acquire knowledge in many different subjects of their choosing. Courses are available in Liberal Arts and Sciences, technical subjects and Physical Education.
