Benefits of Studying at Community College
An article in U.S. News and World Report noted that the majority
of American students who are studying for a bachelor's degree complete
the first two years at a community college and then transfer to the university
for the last two years.
Why is this the trend in America?
Why are more and more international students also following this model?
Seattle Central Community College has 10,000 American students (approximately
600 international students). Most of our college level international students
are in the College Transfer program. After completing a two year Bachelor
of Arts/Sciences degree with good grades, they are able to transfer to
universities in junior (third year) standing. Our students have transferred
to universities all over the country such as Boston University, University
of California -San Francisco, University of Arizona, UCLA, Michigan State
University, University of Oregon, and, of course, the University of Washington.
- Offers over 30 programs
For students who are not interested in a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree,
Seattle Central offers workforce training programs in over 30 professions
such as Nursing, Information Technology, Biotechnology, Graphic Design
and Illustration, Graphic Imaging and Printing Technology, Commercial
Photography, Culinary Arts, or Apparel Design.
- Less Expensive
Community college tuition is less expensive than four year colleges
and universities, particularly if the four year institution is private.
International students who study at Seattle Central Community College
for the first two years can save thousands of dollars.
- Classes are Smaller
Classes are smaller at community colleges than at public universities
for courses offered during the first two years. At a public university
such as the University of Washington or UCLA, an introductory math,
history or psychology class often has 100-300 students in it. Seattle
Central's class sizes range from 25-40 students for the same courses!
Which class do you think gives you more access to the instructor?
- Specialty Programs
Seattle Central offers special programs for international students such
as Intensive ESL, English for Special Purposes and Advanced English
certificates; College Bridge; a High School Completion program; short
term college certificates, and the International Internship Program.
- Top Quality Instructors
At many large state universities, you will have a "teaching assistant"
(T.A.) as your instructor for introductory courses during the first
two years. These T.A's are graduate students who earn money for college
by teaching courses in the field that they are studying. For example,
a graduate student in Biology can often be the instructor of your Biology
101 course.
At Seattle Central, all of your instructors have advanced degrees and
experience in the fields that they teach. For more information about
