Satisfactory Academic Progress

(Revised 11/00 - replaces prior policy)

Students receiving financial aid are required to make satisfactory academic progress in an eligible program of study. This requirement applies to your entire period of attendance at Seattle Central Community College, even though you may not have received financial aid when you previously attended. Our satisfactory academic progress requirements for financial aid recipients are summarized below:

Satisfactory Academic Progress Criteria

To maintain SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS you must satisfy all of the following conditions:

  • You must be enrolled in classes required for your program of study;
  • You must be in good standing with the college and must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.00 grade point average (GPA);

Probation is considered a warning only, and therefore you are eligible for financial aid funding for a probationary quarter. During your probationary quarter, you must register for at least 6 credits and meet ALL SAP CRITERA or you will be placed on Financial Aid Ineligibility status.

Financial Aid Ineligibility

You are ineligible for financial aid if any of the following circumstances apply to you:

  • The maximum number of quarters of attendance allowed has been used;
  • More than two quarters of unsatisfactory progress have occurred;

If you have already been offered financial aid and you are no longer eligible, your financial aid award will be canceled.

Academic Progress Review

Satisfactory Academic Progress for your entire period of enrollment is reviewed prior to offering any financial aid. In addition, Satisfactory Academic Progress is reviewed at the end of each quarter.

  • Grades of .7 - 4.0 and "S" count as completed credits.
  • Grades of "Y" count as completed credits only if assigned in accordance with district grading policy.
  • Grades of less than .7 and letter grades of "I", "N", "NC", "*" and "W" do not count as completed credits.
  • You may repeat a course in which you received an I, N, NC or W grade or a grade less than a 2.00 only once.

Reestablishing Financial Aid Eligibility

If you become ineligible for financial aid due to unsatisfactory academic progress, you may regain eligibility by:

  • Registering for six (6) or more credits at Seattle Central at your own expense; completing the appropriate number of credits based on your enrollment status (identified under "Satisfactory Academic Progress Criteria" above); and having a 2.00 or greater cumulative GPA at the end of the quarter. OR
  • Submitting and securing approval of your written, documented appeal for reinstatement. The appeal should be based on extraordinary circumstances beyond your control.
