Principles of Agroecology
An Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture

This course is a survey of sustainable agriculture with particular attention to the Pacific Northwest. We'll explore crop biodiversity, weed and pest management, livestock production, and organic crop propagation. In addition, issues such as water use and pollution, natural resource conservation and energy use will be presented in the context of sustainable farms.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Compare the practices and ecological sustainability of various models of ecological and industrialized agriculture
• Analyze soil characteristics for plant growth
• Understand and enhance the biogeochemical interactions required for plant growth and reproduction
• Identify common crop plants, weeds and pests in Western WA
• Evaluate the effect of agricultural practices on the environment, human health and the economy
• Discuss energy alternatives and applications for large and small scale agricultural applications

AGROECOLOGY is

• The application of ecology to the design and management of sustainable agroecosystems.
• A whole-systems approach to agriculture and food systems development based on traditional knowledge, alternative agriculture, and local food system experiences.
• Linking ecology, culture, economics, and society to sustain agricultural production, healthy environments, and viable food and farming communities. (Principles of Agroecology)
