*** Trip to Mt. Rainier does not
match geologic topic for that week.
The chapters listed for Alt and Hyndman are just a rough guide. I will give specific reading assignments in class.
The field trip days are tentative.

Geology 208 Spring 2004 Field Trip Menu
Field Trip # 1
Seattle Fault, Sunday 18
April.
Look at geologic evidence for the Seattle Fault at Restoration Point on
Bainbridge Island, Alki Point in west Seattle, Overlook Park, Newport
Hills
and Lake Sammamish. Discuss earthquake potential and hazards in
central
Puget Sound. Minimal amount of walking, slippery on beach and
down
to Lake Sammamish. Tide restricted: low tide (+1) at
noon Time: 8:30 a.m-5:30 p.m (tentative, depends on
ferries).
Field Trip # 2
Columbia River Plateau in the
Vantage
area, Saturday 8 May. Hike the trail to view the fossilized trees
and
tour the Interpretive center at Vantage. Rock Shop for cheap
specimens.
Evidence for ancient giant glacial floods at Frenchman's Coulee and
Echo
Basin. Ancient basalt flows. Short hiking on paved trail
and
again across lava flow, with short descent on trail. 6:00
a.m.-7:00
p.m. (yep, very long drive).
Field Trip #3
Sandstones and fossils of the Puget
Lowlands and Cascade Foothills, Saturday 22 May or Sunday 23 May.
Chuckanut
Drive near Bellingham, that great palm fossil locality on the road to
Mt.
Baker, folded sandstones near Darrington. Lotsa driving.
approximately
6-6.
Field Trip #4
Lopez Island in the San Juans, 5
June Saturday. Cascade geology at its finest, a collage of bits
and
pieces from offshore Washington State. Pillow basalts, ocean
floor
mud, ground up rock along faults, belemnite fossil, etc. Great
scenery.
Another tide and ferry dominated excursion. Low tide: -3.6
!!!!! at noon (tidepooling will be factored into trip).
approximately
6 am -6 pm
Field Trip #5
Mt. Rainier National Park, 11 June
Friday. Via the Nisqually Entrance, to look at a variety of
geology, including glacial outburst flood deposits, old granites, young
volcanic rocks, mudflows, glacial features, etc. Hopefully good
weather for great scenery. A very long day, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
