Field Trip
The field trip for GEL 115A (Seattle
Landslides) is Saturday, 13 October, from 8 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. We
will leave promptly from Seattle Central Community College at 8:00 a.m.
The field trip for GEL 115B (Seattle Fault and Earthquakes) is Sunday, 30 September, from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We will leave promptly from Seattle Central Community College at 8:00 a.m.
The field trip for GEL 115C (Columbia River geology) is Sunday, 21 October, from 6 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We will leave promptly from Seattle Central Community College at 6:00 a.m.
If you are late, and the vans are not here, we have gone without you. You will load and unload at The Cage, where the SCCC vehicles are housed. The entrance to The Cage is located between the barber shop and the Vietnamese cafe, on the west side of Broadway, a half a block south of Pine Street.
Transportation and all costs related to transportation are covered by your transportation fee.
We are using 2 vans (both 12 passenger) to accomodate 24 students, so keep your gear to a minimum. No private vehicles are permitted.
We will eat lunch picnic style, so bring your own food and beverage; no opportunity to buy anything. Bring extra food for those long days.
The field trip will go rain or shine, so dress appropriately; an umbrella is an effective device on rainy field trips. Be prepared if the weather forecast is poor. Sunshine can be intense at altitude as well. There will be a little walking on a slippery beach on the Seattle fault trip and some walking (a mile or two) on the Columbia River trip, so sturdy shoes are required.
The possession or consumption of alcohol is prohibited during SCCC field trips. No smoking in the vans.
Only students registered for this course may participate in either the lecture or field trip; no guests.
No collecting of anything in the State Park on the Columbia River trip.
Safety
Room 5118 is situated on the 5th
floor. About 70 feet down the hall is the stairwell, which takes
you directly out of the building. Do not use the elevator.
During an earthquake while in Room 5118, Duck for Cover. Protect your Head. Stay away from the windows and cabinets. Do not panic. Do not run into the hallway.
On the field trip, be careful near roads, near cliffs and near roadcuts. Be very careful on the beach on the Seattle Fault field trip.
All students must sign the Risk Management Notice.
Special Needs Students
If you need course adaptations or
accomodations because of a disability; if you have emergency medical information
to share with me; or if you need special arrangements in case the building
must be evacuated, please see me as soon as possible. Remember, I'm
here to help.
Supplies
On the field trip, bring both pencil
and pen, a hard writing surface such as a clipboard, and one or two plastic
bread or vegetable bags, or large ziplocs.
Evaluation
Your grade will be based upon participation
in the lectures and field trip, and answers to the questions on the field
trip exercise.
For GEL/SCI 115A (Seattle Landslides), your field trip exercise will be due Monday, 22 October, Room 5123.
For GEL/SCI 115B (Seattle Fault and Earthquakes), your field trip exercise will be due Monday, 8 October, Room 5123.
For GEL/SCI 115A (Columbia River geology), your field trip exercise will be due Monday, 29 October, Room 5123.
