GEL 115 is an introductory course to the geology of Washington State. The only prerequisite for GEL 115 is the same prerequisite for ALL science courses, which is qualification to take MAT 084 (that is, you have taken MAT 081 or higher, or you have tested out of MAT 081). There are no geology or science or other math prerequisites.
GEL 115 satisfies your AA degree requirement for a science class in the physical science category. GEL 115 also counts toward your laboratory science requirement for the AA degree. However, the current policy is that you cannot bundle five different 1-credit classes to make a 5-credit lab class.
GEL 115 has 15 contact hours altogether, 5 of which are spent in lecture and 10 of which are spent in in the field. GEL 115 is taught in a shortened format, only 3 days altogether. We usually meet Wednesday and Thursday for 2.5 hours each and then EITHER Friday, Saturday or Sunday for the all day field trip..
GEL 115 is a 1 credit class.
GEL 115 keeps the cost down. There is a transportation fee, to cover the cost of vans, gas, park entrance fees, ferry fees, etc. BUT, you save big bucks, with NO textbook and NO laboratory fee.
GEL 115 covers a wide range of topics. Past courses have focussed on: landslides of Seattle, ancient glaciers in Puget Sound, the Seattle Fault and earthquake hazards, bedrock geology of Seattle and vicinity, the geology of Vantage along the Columbia River, and the geology of Lopez Island in the San Juans.
GEL 115 has field trips.
