Outside Readings
There may be supplemental readings that deal specifically with the field areas and topics we will be working in and on.  Those reading assignments will be on reserve in the library in 3 ring binders.  You will be able to use them in the library, or photocopy them for your personal use.

Lectures
Lectures will take place Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday from 1:00-2:50 pm in room 5121.

Mike will provide background material about geology in general, material about the specific topic, and material related specifically to the field trips.  The emphasis will be on giving you the background and specifics to prepare you for the field work.

Because this is a shortened format, you must attend every lecture.  Missing class will automatically result in a lowered grade.

Field Exercises
The field exercises will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday following the lectures.   There are no makeups; these are the days.

We depart in the early morning and return in the evening to SCCC.  No overnighters.  See schedule for exact times.

Transportation and all costs related to transportation are covered by your transportation fee.

We are using 2 vans to accomodate 20 students.  No private vehicles are permitted.  No special dropoffs or pickups.

You will depart from and return to SCCC (precise location To Be Announced).  We leave promptly at the specified times, if you are late we leave without you.  Don't be late.

We will eat lunch picnic style, so bring all of your food and beverages for the entire day.  There will be no opportunity to buy anything.

The field trip will go rain or shine, so dress appropriately; an umbrella is an effective device on rainy field trips.  Be prepared if the weather forecast is poor.  Sunshine can be intense at altitude as well.  You must wear sturdy shoes for the field work.

There will be walking, trekking, scrambling, wading and/or other physical exertions.  You must be physically capable.

You are responsible for appropriate field clothing and equipment and supplies.

The possession or consumption of alcohol is prohibited during SCCC field trips.  No smoking in the vans.

Only students registered for this course may participate in either the lecture or field trip; no guests.

No collecting of anything in State or National Parks.

Safety
Room 5121 is situated on the 5th floor.  About 70 feet down the hall is the stairwell, which takes you directly out of the building.  Do not use the elevator.

During an earthquake while in Room 5121, Duck for Cover.  Protect your Head.  Stay away from the windows and cabinets.  Do not panic.  Do not run into the hallway.

On the field trip, be careful near roads, near cliffs and near roadcuts.

All students must sign the Risk Management Notice.

Special Needs Students
If you need course adaptations or accomodations because of a disability; if you have emergency medical information to share with me; or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please see me as soon as possible.

Supplies
For the field trips, you will need to supply writing instruments, notebook and clipboard.

Evaluation
Your knowledge and understanding of the material will be based on the 6 field trip exercises.
