GEL 105 is an introductory course. The only prerequisite for GEL 105 is the same prerequisite for ALL science courses, which is qualification to take MAT 084 (that is, you have taken MAT 081 or higher, or you have tested out of MAT 081). There are no geology or science or other math prerequisites.
GEL 105 satisfies your AA degree requirement for a science class in The Natural World category. GEL 105 also counts toward your laboratory science requirement for the AA degree.
GEL 105 transfers to the University of Washington as ESS 101, and satisfies their degree requirements in the same way as the traditional GEL 101.
GEL 105 has the same number of contact hours as the traditional GEL 101 (66 contact hours), but GEL 105 is taught in a shortened format. Depending upon the version of GEL 105 (A, B, C), the course will run about 2 weeks. The shortened format is two-edged; you're done quickly, but you're working very hard. If you like a more spread out, longer paced course, GEL 105 is probably not for you.
GEL 105 is an alternative instructional method to GEL 101. Depending upon the specific version of GEL 105 (A, B, or C), there is most or all instruction in the field, with either some or no instruction in the traditional classroom.
GEL 105 emphasizes active learning; learning by doing geology out in the field in a natural setting. You will be measuring, sampling, identifying, mapping, censusing, analyzing, etc. etc. in the field.
GEL 105 has a large component of group work, larger than in the traditional GEL 101, because much or all of the instruction is based on field exercises. If you don't fit well with group work, this is not an appropriate course for you. If you like challenging group work, this course might suit you well.
GEL 105 requires physical ability as much of the coursework is based on field exercises. The Hawai'ian version requires substantial hiking experience and ability.
GEL 105 may require the permission of the instructor, who may require completion of a questionaire before enrollment is permitted. The questionaire helps explain to you the unique nature of this course, its physical demands, and helps you assess your compatibility with this alternative type instruction.
