This field trip is scheduled for 17 May, 2003.

The photos were taken on the October 12 2002 cruise with Christian Sarason's SCI 298 class.  We used the MV Charles A. Kane, rented from SCCC's Seattle Maritime Academy (http://seattlecentral.org/maritime).  About 2 dozen SCI 298 students, 7 volunteer SMA students, 4 OIP faculty, 3 SCCC faculty and 3 SMA crew were on board.  Great weather!

Photo 1:  leaving Seattle, in the Ballard Locks.
                salmon were jumping!
Christian Sarason in orange, Greg Langkamp in sunglasses

Photo 2: heading towards station #1, students adjusting to the cold.  looking aft.

Photo 3:  lowering the 500 micron (0.5 millimeter) plankton net.
the copepods with the red pigments were awesome

Photo 4:  The homemade Secchi disk at the foot of Greg Langkamp.
Depth to obscurity was 10.5 meters at Station #1

Photo 5:  The CTD being prepped.  Data will be downloaded from the CTD to the computer; printouts of results can be made for instant discussion.
The CTD is equipped with sensors for pressure/depth, temperature, molecular oxygen, conductivity, turbidity/transparency and chlorophyll.

Photo 6:  Closeup of the CTD unit, and it's victim, the electric winch.
Students fought off the cold by hand hauling the CTD, the old fashioned way.

Photo 7:  Lunchtime at the Kane Grill.  Martin samples the salmon for quality control.  Olympic Mountains in background
