The University of California Berkeley has a cool animated website, where you can see how the correlation coefficient "r" corresponds to different linear scatterplots. Go to:
http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/users/stark/Java/Correlation.htm
For best results, set the number of data points to 15 or 20, then use
your mouse to slide the "r" value back and forth. You can also click
on the graph to add green data points, then click on "use these data" to
modify the plot. Very interactive.
