Unit #1: Units, percents and other essential math

Unit Description: This unit will help you review many essential math concepts that will be used throughout the course. Topics include measuring, accuracy and precision, units of measure, conversion of units and scientific notation.

Discuss syllabus; sign up for calculator rentals, short lecture on units. Start looking around for group partners (preferably 2 students per group). Sign up your group names by Wednesday's class.

Lecture and practice problems with units and percents.

Project #1: Melting the World's Ice
Work in groups all period.
Get started right away with your groups.
Thursday
Sept 30
Project #1: Work in groups all period. Finish the computations for the project.

Discuss homework problems. Sorry! no working on projects during class.

Discuss homework problems and project.  
Tuesday

Quiz #1 (30 minutes). Start unit #2 with a short review of linear functions (20 minutes).

Hand in homework at the start of class (1 per person).
Hand in project at the start of class (1 per group).

Homework:

Chapter 1. Read through Scientific Notation (pg. 22) and read Science in Depth: Global Warming (pg. 28). Do problems #1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 21, 24, 27, 28, 31, 32

Chapter 2. Read through Proportions (pg. 19). Do problems # 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, 27, 28

Remember: all homework, projects and quizzes must be done in pencil.
