NEWS AND UPDATES
Updated June 08, 2009

Welcome to ASL 123!  This page is used for announcements, schedule changes, community contact events, etc.  Check here often.  If you would like to announce an event, send it to me and I will post it.

** Check the Schedule web page for frequent updates or changes to your assignments or what has been taught in class that day and secondly, the News and Updates page constantly for any announcements during and outside of class time!

***Once the ASL 123 Grade Sheet is posted, it is your responsibility to check the Grade Sheet constantly  during the quarter to see that the assignments that you have already turned in are getting recorded.  If you feel that I have overlooked an assignment, please return the paperwork to me so that I can be sure to document that information.  Please hold on to all assignments that I give back to you for the  entire quarter in case I accidentally do not record homework points or grades.   Do not wait until the end of the quarter to detect a mistake!

June 8th:
1. Reminder: Idioms Homework, part 1 and 2 - have already been turned in on various due dates.  I have posted the Answer Key for both assignments so I will not accept any late homework for these two assignments.  2)  This is the last full week of classes. This Wednesday is your last day to turn in all Community Contact hours reports and any other remaining late homework.  No exceptions will be made.  3)  I still have your Signing Naturally workbooks and I know that SN Unit 12 worksheet is due today.  My apologies! I will postpone the due date for these worksheets until this Wednesday. 4.  Please, please check your grades on the Grade sheet this week and make sure I have entered all homework points and grades accurately.  Do not wait until next week during finals to inform me! To date, I have not entered the homework points for Children Of A Lesser God movie report - I am not certain if I returned them to you by mistake.  If so, please return that assignment to me tonight!  5) We will have at least two guest speakers for next Monday evening.  These women are either hearing or deaf mothers of Deaf children and questions will tie in with what you have read in "The Signing Family" text.  I want you to take a few minutes and write down 1 - 2 questions now that you would like to ask these panelists and turn it in to me tonight.

May 27th:
1.  Idioms Homework, part 1 and 2 - have already been turned in on various due dates.   I plan to post the Answer key for both next Monday after class.   This means that I will not accept these particular assignments as late homework after June 1st.   2) Due to being out of town for over 10 days, I am still grading your Expressive Assignment #1 videos.   The videos will be returned to you next Monday.   Thank you for your patience.   3) Barbara, the sub teacher informed me that quite a few students were absent from last Wednesday's class.  This means some of you have missed grammar practice with Temporal Aspect as well as part of Unit 12 on Daily Routines (Time Sequencing grammar).  In regards to your remaining Expressive Assignments, keep in mind that I am placing more grade weight and homework points on your ability to demonstrate ASL grammar correctly.

May 13th:
1. Reminder about next Monday:  Wear dark, solid-colored tops since our Deaf-blind speaker has limited vision and needs to see your hands clearly.  Be sure to meet in Room 1114 that evening!   Pat Cave will start speaking at 7:10 pm until 9 pm.   I will allow you to use this event towards your Community Contact Hours (40 points total) with the understanding that your typed report must be turned in no later than Wednesday, May 27th (no exceptions).

May 11th:
1. Tonight, you will be recording your Expressive Assignment in lab.  Instruction 3) F states that while you record, you will have a partner watch your story and interrupt when necessary and afterwards, each student would need to write down their own self-evaluation on the second evaluation form.   Due to the fact that we will be recording the Deaf Culture video "Children Of A Lesser God" during lab time, we will have a time crunch since it will take two hours to record the whole film.  Therefore, I am dropping this particular instruction for this assignment only.  Don't forget that on Wednesday, class will meet in the lab as well to record the "Children" film for the remaining students who need to record onto their videotapes.  If you can, please get together with other classmates on your own time and share the same video to cut down on recording time.  2) Since we will have a Deaf-Blind speaker coming in next Monday evening, please remember to wear a dark, solid-colored top that contrasts your skin color such as black, navy blue, dark brown, dark green, etc.  Please come to room 1114 instead of going to lab next Monday night.

May 6th:
1) The second Deaf Culture video "Children Of A Lesser God" will be given as an out-of-class assignment due to time constraints.   Be sure to bring a videotape for next Monday and Wednesday's class - we will record the 2-hour film during class time so that you can view it at home.  Therefore go straight to lab on both class days.  2) I will be out of town the week of May 18th - 20th and will be bringing in a sub teacher for these two days.  I will be consulting on the filming of a new DVD to go with the ASL Phrase Book, 3rd edition that was published last year. During my absence, hopefully I will have a Deaf-Blind speaker come to either of the two classes.  Because of the sub teacher, I have pulled the Vocabulary Quiz # 2 back one week earlier so that I can be here to give you the quiz.  In that case, the next quiz on Core Vocabulary Unit 10 and Idioms 1 - 13 will be next Wednesday.

April 27th - 30th:
1. The Student Network List has been updated.  Please check to make sure there are no errors with your personal information.  2. Don't forget next Monday's vocabulary quiz will be on Units 1 - 9 Core vocabulary as well as on Food, Compound and Lexicalized Fingerspelling Signs.   Study your FS and numbers as well.  3) The ASL Tutoring schedule for this quarter has been posted.  Keep in mind you can use 3 hours of tutoring time towards your Community Contact requirement. 4) New info:  The ASL 123 M and W gradesheet has been posted.  Please check the gradesheet frequently to check your progress and also to make certain all homework points and/or grades have been entered.  If not, return the assignment to me so that I can revise the grade sheet. Also, check to see if your Class ID (it's not the same as your student ID!) has been calculated correctly.

April 20th - 22nd:
1.  During the syllabus discussion last Wed regarding the vocabulary quizzes, I originally said that there will be four quizzes; the first three on each unit and the last quiz would be cumulative (Units 10 - 12). I have had second thoughts and I have made changes to reflect that the first quiz  would be based on  Core Vocabulary Units 1 - 9 including the CR 1-6  vocabulary; Compound Signs  Lexicalized Fingerspelling and Food Signs (the last 3 items are from ASL 122). The next three quizzes will be on Units 10, 11 and 12 respectively.  You will still be responsible for studying the ASL Idioms as well.  The first quiz is not until the Monday of the 5th week so you will have ample time to study the vocabulary from ASL 121 and 122.

April 6 - 8th:

1a) The Student Network List is ready (in Course Resources page) for the  M/W class.  Please check your information to make sure it's correct and report any errors to me.    After I pass the Student Contact sheet around tonight, I will update both class sections to show more accurate information.
1b) My instructor adhesive labels are also ready - please do not lose that information.  It has my email and website address on it.

2) Purchase your required text this week and get started on "The Signing Family" text, part 1.  Again, refer to the link in my Course Resources web page for questions for each part.

3) We will have lab on Mondays during the quarter beginning next week.
Make sure you have your SCCC student ID ready for next week's lab - you will need it for the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student ID as well.  Always bring two videotapes to lab weekly, the 1st to keep all of your receptive assignments together and the 2nd for your expressive homework.  You may not need the 2nd video if your computer can access the streamed videos on my website.   That means you will just record your expressive assignments only during lab time.  Just about all the videos you will be watching this quarter are streamed with the exception of the Deaf Culture videos.   All Deaf Culture Videos will be shown in class unless otherwise informed.

4) Community contact hours - Get started now and turn your reports in as soon as you can.  You can use the same places i.e. Starbucks, Jillian's that you attended last quarter however you need to have a signing conversation with Deaf people  for at least 15 minutes or more while you observe an event  Review the Community Contact hours link in my Course Resources web page.   I will be setting up some optional dates for your Community Contact reports to turn in earlier if you wish.  It's not required but strongly encouraged.  Once you have attended a community event, then type up the report and turn it in promptly.  You don't even have to wait until the optional dates for turning them in.  The other option would be to turn in all Community Contact reports on the last due date of the quarter.  See my web schedule for due dates.

5) On my web schedule, I have set up some due dates for certain assignments such as: The Signing Family, RT #1 translation,  1st community contact report, etc.  I want to give you a head start while I work on the Web Schedule and Assignment Due Dates  pages and have both finished by the end of  Week 2.

6) Anyone need to register for this class?  Please see me during break and make sure you have your registration sheet ready for me to sign.  For students transferring from other colleges, remember you need to have a 2.0 grade or above from your ASL 2 class in order to take ASL 123.

7) In my Lectures web page, I will be posting a link called "Grammar Notes for the Quarter" -  it gives you a very brief review of the grammar we will cover this quarter.  Please keep in mind that you are welcome to burn copies of the individual grammar CDs that I will use in class throughout the quarter.  The CDs will be placed in the ASL cabinet under the 123 section within the next two - three weeks.

8) The  NO VOICING rule is to be maintained during class and during breaks.  You have enough sign vocabulary  and will continue to acquire more signs to carry on a decent conversation and this will give you both receptive and expressive practice at the same time.  You are only in this classroom for a total of 5 hours so frankly, that's not a lot of time.  If you must talk, please do so outside the classroom.  If I catch any student talking  and being disruptive during a class activity, I will ask that person to leave and return at the next class section.

9) NO CELL PHONES!  Keep them off!
