NEWS
AND UPDATES
Updated
April 27, 2009
Welcome to ASL 123! This page is used for announcements, schedule changes, community
contact events, etc. Check here often. If you would like
to announce an event, send it to me and I will post it.
**
Check the
Schedule web page for frequent updates or
changes to your assignments or what has been taught in class that day
and secondly, the News and Updates
page constantly for any announcements during and outside of class
time!
***Once the ASL 123 Grade Sheet is posted, it is your responsibility to
check the Grade Sheet constantly during the quarter to see that the assignments that you have already
turned in are getting recorded. If you feel that I have overlooked
an assignment, please return the paperwork to me so that I can be sure
to document that information. Please hold on to all assignments
that I give back to you for the entire quarter in case I
accidentally do not record homework points or grades. Do not
wait until the end of the quarter to detect a mistake!
April 27th
- 30th:
1. The Student
Network List has been updated. Please check to make sure there
are no errors with your personal information.
2. Don't forget
next Monday's vocabulary quiz will be on Units 1 - 9 Core vocabulary
as well as on Food, Compound and Lexicalized Fingerspelling Signs.
Study your FS and numbers as well.
3) The ASL Tutoring
schedule for this quarter has been posted. Keep in mind you
can use 3 hours of tutoring time towards your Community Contact
requirement.
April 20th - 22nd:
1. During
the syllabus discussion last Wed regarding the vocabulary quizzes, I
originally said that there will be four quizzes; the first three on
each unit and the last quiz would be cumulative (Units 10 - 12). I
have had second thoughts and I have made changes to reflect that the
first quiz would be based on Core Vocabulary
Units 1 - 9 including the CR 1-6 vocabulary and the last three
quizzes will be on Units 10, 11 and 12 respectively. You will
still be responsible for studying the ASL Idioms as well. The
first quiz is not until the Monday of the 5th week so you will have
ample time to study the vocabulary from Units 1 - 9.
April 7th - 10th:
1) The Student Network List for both classes have been
revised. Be sure to check the list to make certain your
information is correct. If not, please let me know.
2) Tonight in lab, students will be working on Receptive Translation
#1. For new students who are transferring from
elsewhere to this class, be sure to click on a)
Mental Map Instructions
and b)
Mental Map Examples
in the
Course Resources page
under the Receptive Assignments sub-heading and review
tonight. When viewing any receptive translation in lab,
jotting down a mental map is the first step before doing a
complete English translation outside of lab time. Also, please
review c)
Receptive Translations Instructions under the same sub-heading
and familiarize yourself with these instructions for all Receptive
Translation assignments.
March
31st - April 3rd:
1) The ASL 103 Grade sheet
will be posted under
the Course Resources web page for each course section beginning Week
3. You will need to use a formula
in order to figure out your class ID number. Make sure your
information is accurate once your homework is returned and let me
know if any homework credit or grade is missing. Please hold
on to all your homework paperwork for the entire quarter in case I
may have to ask for them back.
2) The Student Network List is ready (in
Course Resources page)
for both M/W and T/TH sections.
Please check your information to make sure it's correct and report
any errors to me. After I pass the Student
Contact sheet around tonight, I will update both class sections
to show more accurate information. My instructor
adhesive labels are also ready - please do not lose that
information. It has my email and website address on it.
3)
On my web schedule, I have set up some due dates for certain
assignments such as: The Signing Family, RT #1 translation, 1st
community contact report, etc. I want to give you a head start
while I work on my links for both the web schedule and Assignment Due Dates and Quizzes and
have both finished by the end of Week 2.
4) We will have lab on Mondays during the quarter. Make sure you have your SCCC
student ID ready for next week's lab - you will need it for
the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL
class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student
ID as well.
Always bring two videotapes to lab weekly,
the 1st to keep
all of your receptive assignments together and the 2nd for your
expressive homework.
You may not
need the 2nd video if your computer can access the streamed videos
on my website. That means you will just record your
expressive assignments only during lab time. Just about all the
videos you will be watching this quarter are streamed with the
exception of the Deaf Culture videos.
All Deaf Culture Videos will be shown in class unless otherwise
informed.
5) Get
started on your community contact hours
now
and turn your reports in as
soon as you can.
You can use the same
places i.e. Starbucks, Jillian's that you attended last quarter
however
make more effort to communicate with Deaf people as much as
possible. Review the Community
Contact hours link in my Course Resources web page.
I've
set up some optional dates for your Community Contact reports to
turn in earlier if you wish. It's not required but strongly
encouraged. Once you have attended a community event, then
type up the report and turn it in promptly. You don't even
have to wait until the optional dates for turning them in. The
other option would be to turn in all Community Contact reports on
the last due date of the quarter. See my web schedule for
due dates.
5)
In my Lectures web page, I will be posting a link called "Grammar Notes for
the Quarter" - it gives you a very brief review of the grammar we
will cover this quarter. Please keep in mind that you are welcome
to burn copies of the individual grammar CDs that I will use in class
throughout the quarter. The CDs will be placed in the ASL cabinet
under the 103 section within the next two - three weeks.
6) Purchase your
books this week and get started on "The
Signing Family" text, part 1. Again, refer to the link in my
Course Resources web page for questions for each part.
7) Study groups are optional but strongly encouraged.
You can get together with classmates to review what you've learned
in class, go over ASL vocabulary and work on your receptive and
expressive assignments together. I will make one suggestion
here - try to become more independent and work alone especially
with Receptive Translation stories as a way of improving your
receptive skills.
During the syllabus and web
discussion next Monday or Tuesday, I will give students an
opportunity to talk about setting up groups and where to meet.
The Student Network List in my Course Resources web page is set up for
that purpose.
8)
Late Assignment
Sheet: You can use this form for only 1 late
assignment - please read the instructions on that sheet for
clarification. The beauty of this sheet is that you can turn in any one
assignment and get full homework credit provided you did the assignment
correctly. I would suggest you use the Late Assignment sheet for
high point assignments like Receptive Translations, Expressive
Assignments first if needed before you think of using it for an
assignment with less points. This sheet will be passed
out during syllabus/web discussion next week.
