NEWS
AND UPDATES
Updated
May 19, 2008
Welcome to ASL 103! This page is used for announcements, schedule changes, community
contact events, etc. Check here often. If you would like
to announce an event, send it to me and I will post it.
May 19th - May 22nd:
1) The answer key for Idioms #1-13 and Homework Sentences #1
have been posted. For those students who haven't turned in
these particular assignments, I will no longer accept them for
credit. 2) As you
will know by now, Barbara Hayes will be subbing for my classes at
least for the next two weeks. I received word that my sister
had emergency surgery for a brain tumor thus I need to be with my
family at this time. I hope to be back before the end of this
quarter and resume teaching the remainder of the classes.
3) Even though I did say
that all Deaf Culture videos would be viewed in class, the last
video "Sound and Fury" will be an out-of-class assignment due to
time constraints. Please check the schedule and/or Assignment
Due Dates and Quizzes link for the due date.
April 28th - May
1st: 1) This
Wednesday and Thursday, we will be having Patrick Cave, a Deaf-Blind
speaker coming to the class for most of the evening! Be sure
to wear a dark, solid-colored top (navy, black, brown,
purple) so it will be easier for Pat to see your hands. Also read the pink handout on the
Deaf-Blind community for this Wednesday or Thursday.
April 21st - 24th:
1) The Assignment
Due Dates and Quizzes page is finished. You can find this link
in one of two places - my Schedule or Course Resources pages.
Also, we will have 3 vocabulary quizzes instead of four. Your
first quiz on Unit 10 and Idioms 1-13 is next Monday or Tuesday.
I will pretty much use the same format from the last two quarters -
Part 1 will be vocabulary and Part 2 will be numbers and
fingerspelling. I may throw out the
assignment for Idioms 27 - 40 due to time constraints. I'll
let you know later in the quarter.
2) The grade sheet for both class sections
are ready! Check the link in
the Course Resources page. Hold on to all homework that
I have returned to you for the entire quarter and make sure you
check the Grade sheet often in case I may have omitted any homework
points or grades for you! If that happens, be sure to let me
know asap!
April 14th - 17th:
1) For the link on Mental Map
Instructions, I have changed that page over to a power point
presentation that I used in ASL 101. I think it would be more
beneficial and clearer to follow. This link is in my
Course Resources page.
2) The link for Grammar Notes for the quarter has been fixed.
You can now start to look at that page for the grammar that will be
taught this quarter. Remember I will also place CDs with
more comprehensive information for each grammar topic taught in the
lab cabinet under the ASL 103 section. You would need to
bring a blank CD and burn a copy using the lab computer at the front
of the room.
April 7th - 10th:
1) The Student Network List for both classes have been
revised. Be sure to check the list to make certain your
information is correct. If not, please let me know.
2) Tonight in lab, students will be working on Receptive Translation
#1. For new students who are transferring from
elsewhere to this class, be sure to click on a)
Mental Map Instructions
and b)
Mental Map Examples
in the
Course Resources page
under the Receptive Assignments sub-heading and review
tonight. When viewing any receptive translation in lab,
jotting down a mental map is the first step before doing a
complete English translation outside of lab time. Also, please
review c)
Receptive Translations Instructions under the same sub-heading
and familiarize yourself with these instructions for all Receptive
Translation assignments.
March
31st - April 3rd:
1) The ASL 103 Grade sheet
will be posted under
the Course Resources web page for each course section beginning Week
3. You will need to use a formula
in order to figure out your class ID number. Make sure your
information is accurate once your homework is returned and let me
know if any homework credit or grade is missing. Please hold
on to all your homework paperwork for the entire quarter in case I
may have to ask for them back.
2) The Student Network List is ready (in
Course Resources page)
for both M/W and T/TH sections.
Please check your information to make sure it's correct and report
any errors to me. After I pass the Student
Contact sheet around tonight, I will update both class sections
to show more accurate information. My instructor
adhesive labels are also ready - please do not lose that
information. It has my email and website address on it.
3)
On my web schedule, I have set up some due dates for certain
assignments such as: The Signing Family, RT #1 translation, 1st
community contact report, etc. I want to give you a head start
while I work on my links for both the web schedule and Assignment Due Dates and Quizzes and
have both finished by the end of Week 2.
4) We will have lab on Monday or Tuesdays depending on which class
section you are in during the quarter. Make sure you have your SCCC
student ID ready for next week's lab - you will need it for
the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL
class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student
ID as well.
Always bring two videotapes to lab weekly,
the 1st to keep
all of your receptive assignments together and the 2nd for your
expressive homework.
You may not
need the 2nd video if your computer can access the streamed videos
on my website. That means you will just record your
expressive assignments only during lab time. Just about all the
videos you will be watching this quarter are streamed with the
exception of the Deaf Culture videos.
All Deaf Culture Videos will be shown in class unless otherwise
informed.
5) Get
started on your community contact hours
now
and turn your reports in as
soon as you can.
You can use the same
places i.e. Starbucks, Jillian's that you attended last quarter
however
make more effort to communicate with Deaf people as much as
possible. Review the Community
Contact hours link in my Course Resources web page.
I've
set up some optional dates for your Community Contact reports to
turn in earlier if you wish. It's not required but strongly
encouraged. Once you have attended a community event, then
type up the report and turn it in promptly. You don't even
have to wait until the optional dates for turning them in. The
other option would be to turn in all Community Contact reports on
the last due date of the quarter. See my web schedule for
due dates.
5)
In my Lectures web page, I will be posting a link called "Grammar Notes for
the Quarter" - it gives you a very brief review of the grammar we
will cover this quarter. Please keep in mind that you are welcome
to burn copies of the individual grammar CDs that I will use in class
throughout the quarter. The CDs will be placed in the ASL cabinet
under the 103 section within the next two - three weeks.
6) Purchase your
books this week and get started on "The
Signing Family" text, part 1. Again, refer to the link in my
Course Resources web page for questions for each part.
7) Study groups are optional but strongly encouraged.
You can get together with classmates to review what you've learned
in class, go over ASL vocabulary and work on your receptive and
expressive assignments together. I will make one suggestion
here - try to become more independent and work alone especially
with Receptive Translation stories as a way of improving your
receptive skills.
During the syllabus and web
discussion next Monday or Tuesday, I will give students an
opportunity to talk about setting up groups and where to meet.
The Student Network List in my Course Resources web page is set up for
that purpose.
8)
Late Assignment
Sheet: You can use this form for only 1 late
assignment - please read the instructions on that sheet for
clarification. The beauty of this sheet is that you can turn in any one
assignment and get full homework credit provided you did the assignment
correctly. I would suggest you use the Late Assignment sheet for
high point assignments like Receptive Translations, Expressive
Assignments first if needed before you think of using it for an
assignment with less points. This sheet will be passed
out during syllabus/web discussion next week.
9) My Tuesday and Thursday section
is very small - can any of you move over to that section? The
class is taught at 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. and will meet in 1114. I
have some ADD/Drop sheets if you want to change over to the
Tuesday and Thursday section.
