ASL 102
Expressive Assignment # 1 -
"The
Goals:
Practice using signs, classifiers; eye gaze; facial expression; body expression
and lexicalized fingerspelled signs all within a short story.
The Assignment:
1.
Use the "A Candy Bar" story at the end of Signing Naturally Unit 7on
your Level 1 Student workbook DVD as
the model for
your story.
Re-tell the narrative except
please use a different object in place of
the candy bar.
2. Create a neat
mental map for this story.
3.
Memorize
the story and in addition, incorporate two Lexicalized Fingerspelled Signs
(#BACK and #SOON)
anywhere in your narrative.
Please do not do script reading or
look at notes during video recording. The most important goal for this lab assignment is to produce a
clear and well-articulated story.
4. Some areas to focus on:
A. Be aware of spatial agreement/role shifting. For
example, see which side of Brian
are the candy
bar and the 2nd person located? Pay attention to where Brian
directs his
eye gaze to the 2nd person and throughout the narrative.
B. Make sure your signs are produced
accurately
C. Keep your pace even and smooth.
If you make a mistake, correct it by either
shaking your head or "WAVE-NO"
before giving the correct sign and keep
going.
Don't backtrack to the beginning of a sentence and start all over again.
D. Pay close attention to facial expression
and prosody - are you incorporating
both?
Are you conveying Brian's mood/feelings accurately?
E. While
videotaping in the lab, please remember not to chew gum or wear caps or hats.
You may be
blocking out important facial grammar if you do so. Make sure you are
recording
from head to waist only and that your arms/hands are not cut off screen.
