NEWS AND UPDATES

Reminder:  Check the Schedule page for frequent updates or changes to your assignments or what has been taught in class that day and secondly, the News and Updates page constantly for any announcements during and outside of class time!
In case of inclement weather and possible class cancellations, go to www.seattlecolleges.org home page and clink on the link for inclement weather.
If a class has to be cancelled due to inclement weather, be sure to click on my News and Updates page to get any special announcements regarding homework.

March 17th - 18th:  1) Your most recent grades have been posted..I will make sure that the total number of homework points that you have accumulated is accurate.  I am noticing that the Excel function for computing total homework points isn't working properly so will remedy this asap.   2) I am passing out your homework assignments that you have turned in.  Please make certain before you leave tonight that all homework points and grades have been accounted for especially the homework assignments returned tonight.  I will pull up the Grade sheet tonight for you to look at.   3) Registration for ASL 103 evening sections is increasing slowly.   I do not know at this point if these two classes are a go or not.   For those who haven't registered (not including those who must wait until the beginning of the Spring quarter), please do so asap.  Have a great spring break and start studying Core Vocabulary Unit 10.

March 10th - 13th:  1) This is the last full week of classes!  Please keep in mind that any remaining Community Contact Reports and any late homework is due this Wednesday or Thursday.  2) Remember to go to lab this Wednesday or Thursday as well to work on your sign draft for Expressive Assignment #3.  Please have your Peer/Instructor Evaluation form ready.  As soon as you have finished recording your draft, you are to immediately switch VTs and evaluation forms with your partner and do the evaluation the very same night thus time is of the essence.  Please come prepared.  3) This is Randy's last week of tutoring.  Tutoring ends on Thursday and he will not be returning this Spring quarter as he has been hired for a full- time position elsewhere.  For those of you who have used Randy for tutoring, I hope you will take some time to say farewell.  If you are interested in private tutoring, Randy may be able to offer some if time permits.  I believe he has his email address posted on the sign-up sheet.   4) Enrollment for M/W class is 9 (11) and T/TH section is 7 (8) so far.  Two students for M/W are not allowed to sign up until beginning of the spring quarter due to certain restrictions and the same is true for 1 student on T/TH thus the number in parenthesis.

March 3rd - 6th:  1) Please keep in mind that there are only 2 full weeks of classes left and registration for ASL 103 for both evening sections are very, very low!  My division chair will most likely make a decision to cancel the class within the next two weeks so if you are intending to register for ASL 103, please do it soon!

February 18th - 21st:  1) Expressive Assignment #2 -- I was checking my web schedule recently and discovered that the links going directly to this assignment from the schedule were not set up.  I have rectified this and convey my apologies.  Don't forget you can still access the Expressive  Assignment #2 instructions from my Course Resources web page.  You should be working on your narratives and getting your mental maps and Peer/Instructor evaluation form ready for next week's lab.  Be sure to fill out the left column of the evaluation sheet thoroughly before coming to lab.   2) Even though I have scheduled a time for the text Deaf Again and a possible Deaf-Blind Speaker next month, it may not take place since I still have some lecture materials I need to get caught up.  So please be aware of this.  3) If you are planning to take the evening sections of ASL 103, please register as soon as you can.  Once March rolls around, I will keep you informed on enrollment numbers.

February 7th - 14th:   1) Good news!  For those who are planning to take ASL 103 next quarter, a Tuesday and Thursday section  (Item #164) will be offered as well as a Monday and Wednesday section (Item #163)!   You can go ahead and register soon!      2)  Again, I am having difficulty posting my ASL 102 grade sheet!   Hopefully the problem will be remedied by beginning of next week!  Please hang on to all  returned assignments for the duration of this quarter in case I accidentally did not document on the grade sheet.  Once the grade sheet is up and running, it will be your responsibility to check the grade sheet to make certain all your homework assignments and quizzes are getting recorded.  Do not wait until the end of the quarter to tell me if some homework points have been omitted!  3)  For both sections, you will need to watch the remaining 3 Deaf Culture Videos as an out-of-class assignment.  You only have to write two reports...the first is for "Deaf President Now Protest"  - Culture VT # 080 and then a combined report  for Deaf President Now - 5th anniversary and Deaf President Now - 10th anniversary (Culture VT # 067 and #068)   The questions for the last 2 VTs are the same so in the same report, put down 5 results for DPN- 5th anniversary and then, 5 results for DPN - 10th anniversary.  Please check my schedule and the Assignment Due Dates and Quizzes page for the due dates for the 2 reports.  4) The streamed video for the Food Vocabulary in the Course Resources page is up and running - look at the top part of the Resources page and click on the blue ball icon to watch the video.  You should be studying the food vocabulary, compound signs and  SN Unit 7  Core Vocabulary now.

January 28th - 31st:  1) My web schedule is finally completed with all the due dates included.  2) The Assignment Due Dates and Quizzes page is also done.  You can click on the blue ball for this link on the top of my web schedule or  go to my Course Resources page, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the link for the same page there.  3) The ASL 102 gradesheet which is on the bottom of my Course Resources page is not yet posted.  I am ironing out some Excel problems with this page and the gradesheet should be ready no later than next Monday.  I was hoping to get all three pages done last week but due to my illness all last week, that was not possible.  So once more, thank you for your patience!

January 14th - 17th:  1) Randy Bessner's tutoring schedule is now posted on the door of Room 1128.   His hours are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 3 - 7 pm.   New tutoring schedules will be posted weekly on Thursdays for the following week thus it's your responsibility to sign for a tutoring slot as soon as possible.    Since Randy is only here on Wednesdays for the Mon/Wed students,  Tues/Thurs students should hold off signing up for Wednesdays and give the M/W students priority.     Remember you can use up to 2 hours for the Community Contact (CC) requirement.  If you use tutoring frequently, then I will allow a maximum of 3 hours for your CC homework.   2) Should you be absent on a certain class day say on M/W, you can join the other class section  on T/Th to get more or less caught up.   Please let me know in advance if this happens.

January 7th - 10th:  1) The Student Network List for both class sections are ready - click on your class section link at the bottom of the Course Resources page and make certain your information is correct.  If not, please inform me of any changes.

January 2nd- 3rd:   1) There are some Community Contact (CC) events coming up this weekend such as Gillian's and Starbucks on Friday and Saturday respectively.   Your first CC report is not due until the end of this month.   Remember this is an optional date.  You have until the end of this quarter to turn in all 5 hours for your Community Contact requirement.  I strongly encourage you to turn in your CC reports early  instead of waiting until the end of this quarter.  Turn in your CC reports as soon as you have attended an event.  For students who transferred to SCCC this quarter, the community contact events are posted on the ASL/ITP Lab bulletin board next to room 1129.  Get an early start on your CC hours if possible.  Click on the link for Community Contact Events under my Course Resources page for homework instructions.  2) For those students who have not taken ASL 1 with me, be sure to check my Home webpage and review the General Resources information as well as reviewing my ASL 101 website.  You may find some of these resources helpful.   For all students, please navigate my ASL 102 website and become familiar with all my web pages and links this week.  I will get these pages up on the web asap.   Remember I will be giving you  instructor information adhesive labels with my email and website address next week so please don't not lose that information.  For the time being, my web address is www.seattlecentral.edu/faculty/bbernstein  and then click on ASL 102 in the left margin of my Course Home page.  3)  For the future, check my ASL 102 web pages daily especially my Schedule and Course Resources pages. The schedule and Assignment Due Dates pages will be completed by end of week 2 so I ask for your patience.  4) We will have lab on Mondays and Tuesdays (depending on which class section you are in) beginning next weekMake sure you have your SCCC student ID ready for next week's lab - you will need it for the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student ID as well.  Always bring two videotapes to lab weekly, the 1st to keep all of your receptive assignments together and the 2nd for your expressive homework.  You may not need the 2nd video if your computer can access the streamed videos on my website.   That means you will just record your expressive assignments only during lab time.  All assigned videos with the exception of Deaf Culture videotapes and those for extra credit are streamed therefore accessible via my website.  5) My web schedule for the entire winter quarter is not ready.  It should be finished by the end of the 2nd week so I ask for your patience.   When you check my schedule, just pay attention to this week's information.  I have already included some homework assignments for you to get started on such as your Community Contact hours, your text (Deaf Again) assignments and to be studying your Core Vocabulary for Unit 6 and CR 1-6.

*** Please check  the ASL 102 Grade Sheet constantly to see that the assignments that you have already turned in are getting recorded.  If you feel that I have overlooked an assignment, please return the paperwork to me so that I can be sure to document that information.  Please hold on to all assignments that I give back to you for the  entire quarter in case I accidentally do not record homework points or grades. Thank you!

April 3rd:   1) For those students who have not taken ASL 1 with me, be sure to check my Home webpage and review the General Resources information as well as reviewing my ASL 101 website.  You may find some of these resources helpful.   For all students, please navigate my ASL 102 website and become familiar with all my web pages and links this week.  Remember I will be giving you  instructor information adhesive labels with my email and website address tonight so please don't not lose that information.   2)  Check my ASL 102 web pages daily!   3) We will have lab on Tuesdays beginning next week.  Make sure you have your SCCC student ID ready for this week's lab - you will need it for the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student ID as well.  Always bring two videotapes to lab weekly, the 1st to keep all of your receptive assignments together and the 2nd for your expressive homework.  6) Regarding your community contact hours, continue to turn them in as soon as you complete a report. I am aware that some students are accustomed to turning in their community contact hours at the end of the quarter rather than on a monthly basis which I have done with my other classes with no problems.  I will not mark down any community contact hours as being late if any of you haven't turned them in by the 2 suggested due dates earlier in the quarter.  I would rather that you turn in any community contact reports regardless of the due dates.  If you have done a community contact report early,  go ahead and turn them in.  There is no need to wait until the due date to turn them in. The last day to turn in any community contact reports will be Tuesday, June 12th.
