NEWS AND UPDATES

*** Check the Schedule web page for frequent updates or changes to your assignments or what has been taught in class that day and secondly, the News and Updates page constantly for any announcements during and outside of class time!  In case of inclement weather and possible class cancellations, go to www.seattlecolleges.org home page and clink on the link for inclement weather.  If a class has to be cancelled due to inclement weather, be sure to click on my News and Updates page to get any special announcements regarding homework.

****It is your responsibility to check  the ASL 122 Grade Sheet constantly  during the quarter to see that the assignments that you have already turned in are getting recorded.  If you feel that I have overlooked an assignment, please return the paperwork to me so that I can be sure to document that information.  Please hold on to all assignments that I give back to you for the  entire quarter in case I accidentally do not record homework points or grades.   Do not wait until the end of the quarter to detect a mistake!

March 16th -19th:
1) Reminder:
This is the last full week of classes!  It's countdown time!  All CC reports and any late homework are due no later than this Wed or Thurs.  2) Grammar Quiz is due next Monday or Tuesday.  You should have received your handout last Wed. or Thurs.  3) Mon/Wed class:  I am seriously thinking of pulling back the RT Final to this Wed after you take your fourth quiz. I'll discuss that tonight. For both classes: The signer for the final is Mizzy Geitz  - the same person who signed the Homework Sentences #2 video.  Review all 122 RTs and core vocabulary from this past quarter. It was decided tonight (3-16-09) that the RT final for the M/W class will remain on the original date, the 23rd.  4) Please register for ASL 123 asap.   Remember you can pay your tuition on a monthly basis.

 March 9th -12th:
1) We only have two full weeks of classes left thus the winter quarter is winding down.  Several items for you to keep in mind:
a) The remainder of the web schedule and the Assignments Due Dates page have been finalized so please pay very close attention to due dates!   I have thrown out a couple of requirements such as RT #6 and peer evaluations for Expressive Assignment #3 due to time constraints.   Deadline for all Community Contact hours and any late homework is March 17th or 18th.  No exceptions will be made!  b) Instead of bringing in a Deaf-Blind speaker, I will have a couple of guest speakers for both M/W and T/TH classes on Monday and Tuesday, March 16th and 17th.  The speakers are Deaf and come from predominantly oral backgrounds so it will be interesting to hear about their life and educational backgrounds and compare them to the Deaf Again text.  I plan on having a Deaf-Blind speaker come to my ASL 3 classes instead.   c) Culture and Grammar Questionnaire (5% of your class grade) - I am still working on this.  I will pass this out hopefully at the next class section and this will be a take-home assignment. d) There will be no Spontaneous Dialogue final but instead another Expressive Assignment which will cover Units 8 and 9.

2) Registration for ASL 123 is now taking place.  If you plan to register, please do it as soon as possible.  The college district is going through some very severe budget restrictions and this could affect our ASL classes if enrollment is too low.  Please be aware that the Registration Office has implemented a new payment policy in which you can pay for your tuition on a monthly basis instead of a lump sum.

3) The Tuesday/Thursday class will be having their Receptive Translation Final on Thursday, March 19th which is one class section before the actual Final Exams week, due to the fact that there are two other instructors having to use the lab on Tuesday the 24th.

Added March 11th:
4) Culture and Grammar quiz will just be focusing on ASL grammar portion only
(Basic ASL Sentence Types). The Deaf Culture part will be postponed to ASL 3.  Since this is a take-home, open-book quiz, you can work with your classmates on this assignment but your sentence examples must be your own!  For instance, I will ask you what non-manual grammatical signs/prosody are used with WH-questions and then ask you to give me an example of a WH-question in ASL glosses/sign order.

January 26th - 29th:
1) The Student Network List and the ASL 122 Winter 2009 ASL Grade sheet have been set up for each section. You can find both links in the Course Resources Page.  Please refer to the paragraph (green) regarding your responsibilities re: the grade sheet.
2) The Assignment Due Dates have been set up for January and February assignments.  I am still fine tuning the due dates for March assignments.
3) Tues/Thurs section only - starting this Thursday, go to room 3209 and not 4138.  We will use room 3209 for Thursday classes for the rest of this quarter.  Don't forget!

January 5th - 8th:

1)
Community Contact Hours: As spelled out in your syllabus, you will be required to do 5 hours of  Community Contact observation again this quarter and you have until the end of this quarter to turn in your reports for those 5 hours.   However,  I strongly encourage you to turn in your CC reports early  instead of waiting until the end of this quarter.   I will post an optional due date for your first Community Contact report for the end of this month on my Assignment Due Dates page.  Even better, turn in your CC reports as soon as you have attended an event.  For students who transferred to SCCC this quarter, the community contact events are posted on the ASL/ITP Lab bulletin board next to room 1129.  Get an early start on your CC hours if possible. For homework instructions, click on the link for Community Contact Events under my Course Resources page.

2
) New Students: For students who have not taken ASL 121 with me, be sure to check my ASL 121-123 Home webpage and review the General Resources information on the same page as well as reviewing my ASL 101 website.  You may find some of these resources helpful.   For all students, please navigate my ASL 102 website and become familiar with all my web pages and links this week.   Remember I will be giving you  instructor information adhesive labels with my email and website address this week so please don't not lose that information.  For the time being, my web address is www.seattlecentral.edu/faculty/bbernstein  and then click on ASL 102 in the left margin of my Course Home page.

3
) Web schedule:  for the entire winter quarter is not ready.  It should be finished by the end of the 2nd week so I ask for your patience.   When you check my web schedule, just pay attention to this week's information.  I have already included some homework assignments for you to get started on such as your Community Contact hours, your text (Deaf Again) assignments and to be studying your Core Vocabulary for Unit 6 and CR 1-6.  The due dates for these particular assignments are highlighted  in red.

4) ASL/ITP Lab: We will have lab on Mondays and Tuesdays (depending on which class section you are in) beginning next week.  Make sure you have your SCCC student ID ready for next week's lab - you will need it for the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student ID as well.  Always bring two videotapes to lab weekly, the 1st to keep all of your receptive assignments together and the 2nd for your expressive homework. When you are not using these videotapes, leave them on them on my lab shelf designated for your specific class section to save carting them around.   You may not need the 2nd video if your computer can access the streamed videos on my website.   That means you will just record your expressive assignments only during lab time.  All assigned videos with the exception of Deaf Culture videotapes and those for extra credit are streamed therefore accessible via my website.

5)
Absences: Should you be absent on a certain class day, say on Monday or Wednesday, you can join the other class section  on Tuesday or Thursday to get more or less caught up.   Please let me know in advance if this happens.  Please don't do this often!  Both class sections will not be up to par on lecture materials due to the two holidays occurring on Mondays this quarter.

6) Students who took my ASL 121 class last quarter will find their videotapes on my lab shelf under the assigned class section.   I will return all ASL 121 homework to you asap.

7)  Need to add this class?  See me during break.

8)  As in ASL 121, please adhere to the NO VOICING rule during class time.  Leave it outside the classroom! You will only be allowed to use your voices when I give you permission to do so.
