DEAF CULTURE  VIDEOTAPES:
(40 Deaf Culture and Reading points)

When you study a language, you must also study the culture of the people who use the language.  Through these videotapes we will explore the world of Deaf people.

Some of these videos we will watch together in class.  Some will be homework assignments.  You will need to watch all the videos and complete the assignments to get full credit for this part of the course.

All videotapes are on reserve in the Media Center in the Library and in the ASL/ITP Lab

OUT OF CLASS VIEWING AND RESPONSE QUESTIONS: We will not watch all 4 videos in this specific order. See my web schedule for due dates.

1. Love is Never Silent - In this movie and in the book Train Go Sorry, the Deaf world is viewed through the eyes of a hearing person.  When you are watching these videos and movies do you take into account who is filtering the information?  Do you consider the source? Describe one benefit and one detriment you have considered regarding getting information about deaf people from a hearing person.

IN-CLASS VIEWING AND RESPONSE QUESTIONS  - your papers should be typed and at least 1/2 pages - 1 page long.

 1.  See What I Mean - After watching the video reflect upon the information presented in the video and respond to these questions:

    1. Identify two differences between "Hearing" culture and "Deaf" culture.
    2. Were you aware of these differences prior to watching the movie?
    3. Were you surprised by these differences and why?

2. Fingerspelling: Receptive and Expressive Fluency:  In this video, Joyce Groode refers to the "3 C's".   What are the 3 C's and define them.  Give an example of each.

 3. The Mind Traveler - Ushers Syndrome - Deaf Blind Community in Seattle -  Describe the symptoms of Usher's Syndrome.  What does  the city of Seattle have to offer Deaf-Blind people?   Give 3 reasons.  At the end of the film Oliver Sacks asks some DB people which they would prefer to have their vision or hearing.  Why do you think the DB responded the way they did?
