Consecutive Interpreting

 

First exercise:

Please work in groups of 3.

 

Be sure to have your videotape set up when you are to be the interpreter.=“B”

 

A. Do a short 2-3 min spoken monologue about yourself. Stop after every idea unit for B to interpret.

B. consecutive interpret the speech in English (spoken) which means you listen and look at A and when A stops, you start by looking at C and do your interpretation to C. and

C. listen and take notes.

 

All are to discuss any information that was clear, missing or skewed.

Look for:

1.    Message completeness- is the message preserved?

2.    Audible-is the message loud enough?

3.    Intelligible-Is the speech clear and well pronounced?

4.    Intonation-similar to the speaker?

5.    Neutral-does the interpreter react to the message or the participants?

Write the information in B’s workbook. Change places.

 

For Homework: Read the Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting pages 11-28. Be sure to do the workbook exercise (answer questions) on pp. 29-31.

Also read and answer questions in Unit 1: Intralingual Exercises: pp. 33-36.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1) 1.2:

A. Do a short 2-3 min spoken English monologue including fingerspelled words i.e., names, location name and numbers etc.

B. Take notes especially for fingerspelled words and numbers then do consecutive interpreting in ASL.

C. listen (observe) and take notes

 

 

1.    Message completeness- is the message preserved?

2.    Interpretation-was it interpreted correctly/

3.    Intelligible-Are the signs clear and fluent?

4.    Prosody-similar to the speaker?

5.    Neutral-does the interpreter react to the message or the participants?

 

All discuss and share thoughts in your workbook.

All must be on videotape.

 

2) 1.3

Person A and C will converse for 3-4 minutes and B will interpret between them.

Remember B is not really interpreting but using listening skills and restating it to both A and B.

Remember when A is talking, B must watch A then look at C when restating the message and when C is talking, B must direct his/her gaze to C and then direct his/her gaze to A. 

 

 

3) Discuss Semantic Clusters- handout

 

For Homework:

A. Read Unit 2: Errors in Interpretation. You need to do the exercises in this unit and also translate Unit 2.1 story: “Newspaper Layout with Amber Lewnes” We will work together on Unit 2.1 in class.

 

B. Type the transcript to the audiotape you were given.
