Required Materials in Your Portfolio
Part I: Business Papers:
____ 1. Current business card advertising yourself as an interpreter.
____ 2. Cover letter (letter of introduction) expressing your interest in a hypothetical job. You should choose an area you are most interested in such as interpreting in the elementary school or interpreting in the business or mental health field etc.
____ 3. Current Resume reflecting your internship experience including areas and hours.
____ 4. An invoice showing a hypothetical address for both yourself and the addressee.
____5. Fee Schedule Worksheet (handout) with information filled in about average fee for interpreters in your area. You may find this information through in-class guest presenters from interpreting service agencies and from other sources.
____6. Assignment Intake Form (handout)
Part II: Your Work:
____7. 1 videotape or DVD with 2 of your best English to ASL interpreting work, it should reflect the following:
· at least one transliteration,
· at least one in American Sign Language
· at least one should be a lecture or narrative format
· at least one should show some role-shifting such as storytelling
· Each segment should be at least five (5) minutes or less
· The information is clearly written/typed on the videotape or DVD with your name and titles.
· If you prefer, you may include your ASL to English interpretation on the videotape or DVD. Be sure it shows your face and your voice is clear.
____8. 1 audiotape with your best ASL to English work, it should include the following:
· A transcript to accompany the voiced interpretation
· Inflection and modulation
· At least 5 minutes or less
· The audiotape include your name and title or if you choose to include your voiced interpretation onto the videotape/DVD, be sure to add the information to the VHS or DVD.
Part III: Job Resources:
On paper, type up the information below:
____9. List at least three interpreting agencies in your area. It should include address, name of person to contact, phone number and email address.
____10. List at least three educational institutions such as elementary, middle, high schools, colleges and/or universities including address, name of person to contact, phone number and email address.
____11. List at least three area businesses with Deaf employees. Be sure to include address, name of person to contact, phone number and email address.
____ 12. List the names and contact information of at least three experienced and/or certified interpreters in your area for continued support and mentorship.
____ 13. At least 6 names including contact information of people you plan to use for references. These can be your present and former supervisors, teachers, trainers, mentors, etc. Be sure you have their consent to provide references for you.
____14. You should have a total of 18 information listed on your resource page.
____ 15. Be sure all these papers and tape are neatly placed in a binder in the order as shown and labeled clearly. The front cover of the binder should have the following in any order of your preference:
1. your name,
2. course number
3. course name and
4. date
