SCCC is offering a new series of courses that can be taken upon completion of MAT 098. These courses are designed to address the educational needs of students interested in teaching at the middle or elementary school levels. This series of courses will help students develop problem solving skills and enhance their understanding of math concepts taught at K-8 levels

    The courses are:

  • activity-based
  • focused on non-routine, multi-step problems
  • align with Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR) and  National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards
  • addresses the broad range of learning styles encountered in elementary school students

The first course in the series, MAT 170 focuses on problem solving, number sense, arithmetic operations, and algebraic thinking. MAT 170 is a five credit course.

MAT 171 deals with measurement, ratio, proportion, and geometry, sorting and displaying data, probability, chance and odds. MAT 171 is a five credit course. 2.0 in MAT170 is the prerequisite to take MAT171.

Prerequisites may be waived by instructor.

OPTIONAL SERVICE CREDITS

Students have the option to take 2 service credits. These credits are earned by helping out at a local elementary or middle school either as a teacher’s aide, tutoring students in elementary level mathematics, or working in an after-school program. The project details and reporting requirements, site assignments, and hours may be negotiated during any of the courses. Students must document a minimum of 15 hours for each service credit.
