Attendees will work throughout the five days in teams to innovate, plan and demonstrate new and enhanced approaches to implementing the College Readiness Standards.

Beginning Monday, August 20 to Friday, August 24, TMP's third major summer event will bring together more than eighty participants and resource experts from Washington and beyond with the singular focus of improving math success for all students. This broad goal will undoubtedly take on many forms over the five days but student math success and post-secondary readiness will remain as the central thread throughout the week. The majority of participants will have in-depth backgrounds in mathematics teaching, assessment and curricular design. Some participants will also bring in-depth school / college leadership experience while still others will add business and communications savvy to the mix.

Four strands form the backdrop for this summer event. From each, sub-strands and cross-connections will emerge and a mix of sessions will flow from all strands.

Admission is competitive and geared toward teams. Team composition can vary: cross-sector (K-12, higher ed), cross-discipline, multi-school districts to name just a few possible configurations. Teams must apply and propose work plans for the week that complement TMP's core parameters and the College Readiness Standards. Teams proposing innovative ideas while being realistic in their scope, timelines and work plans will have the best chances for attending this all expense paid TMP event.

Catching Waves: Using Engagement to Address Critical Issues

Held in San Jose, California

Washington Campus Compact and the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium, our partners from state compacts in California, Hawaii, and Oregon, invite your participation in the Tenth Annual Continuums of Service Conference, April 12-14, 2007 in San Jose, California. The conference will bring together 500 colleagues from the western region and beyond to explore multiple perspectives on service-learning and civic engagement; share program models, research, and best practices; and network with diverse service-learning practitioners.

Conference participants will include learners and educators from diverse constituencies: faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students; government, community agency and organization partners; student development and leadership professionals; curriculum specialists; service-learning directors, funding agency representatives; and institutional administrators, among others.

Seattle Transition Project (STP)

The STP involves high school mathematics teachers, community college faculty and administrators from the Seattle Public Schools and the Seattle Community College District, with support from Eastern Washington University, in deepening cross-sector partnerships through the development of a cross-sector mathematics learning community. The learning community is engaged in ongoing professional development focused on implementing the College Readiness Standards and identifying curricular and student support strategies targeting under-represented minority and other under-served student populations.

Conference continued the conversations started in December 2006. Uri Treisman helped facilitate the discussion. Key areas were identified that will help us focus the grant application for the next two ears of the project.

Lost in Transition Conference: Seattle Transition Project

A one day conference to begin a conversation on better serving the mathematics education needs of Seattle students as they transition from high school to college mathematics. Conference attendees include math faculty from Seattle Community Colleges and Seattle Public School math teachers.

Keynote Speakers:

Uri Treisman is professor of mathematics and the executive director of the Charles A Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin. For his work on nurturing minority student high achievement in mathematics, he was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1992. In December 1999, he was named as one of the outstanding leaders of higher education in the 20th century by the magazine Black Issues In Higher Education. He has been described as “an advocate for equity and excellence in education for all children in all his work.”

Jacqueline Coomes is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Eastern Washington University, a member of the APTP Committee (UW Math Placement test), former coordinator of developmental mathematics courses at EWU, former Math Specialist with TRIO SSS program, and has worked on the TMP since 2002.

RACE and PEDAGOGY CONFERENCE

The conference brought together scholars, teachers, and students as well as community partners to discuss the pedagogical implications of race in higher education, particularly but not exclusively in institutions and programs oriented towards a liberal education in the arts and sciences. Refining, extending, and questioning our understanding of the pedagogical implications of race is critical if we are to improve the racial-cultural experiences of all our students and prepare our students for citizenship and leadership in a diverse world where race continues to matter.

TMP-II, Transition Math Project Summer Math Institute 2006

By all accounts, this year's Transition Math Project (TMP) Summer Math Institute was a success. Seeing local teams work long days to collaboratively refine their project plans was a reminder of just how important this work is to Washington educators. The institute's approach was pretty simple: Invite cross-sector teams representing all regions of Washington to spend four intense days with a mix of experts in the beautiful Eastern foothills of Washington’s Cascade Mountains. However, the results were rich: Over 20 concurrent and plenary sessions led by national, regional and local experts and a raft of new connections and ideas! It was TMP's intention to create an event that allowed for idea sharing, partnership development and project planning.

As the TMP-II logo and caption (Building math capacity by supporting teachers and developing partnerships) convey, this second phase effort is fundamentally about supporting the development and ensuring the dissemination of innovative, standards-based model materials across the state, and across all sectors. Further, the logo and caption represent TMP's commitment to ensuring that local projects have the resources to create lasting partnerships and products to implement the College Readiness Standards in effective, useful ways.

Future Teachers Conference

at Green River Community College

Each May beginning in the year 2000, the Teachers of Tomorrow club has held an annual Future Teachers Conference. During these conferences, local educators present their best lessons and/or advice for those interested in teaching as a career. The daylong event includes a wide range of breakout sessions on various topics as well as breakfast and lunch.

All of the Future Teachers Conferences at Green River have been huge successes, with 100 – 200 participants from community colleges, high schools, and 4-year schools.
