Student Interpreter Club

Learn about our Student Interpreter Club! Come and support your fellow students by participating in SIC activities and fundraising. Network, make friends and pick up new skills!

The Student Interpreter Club (SIC) has 5 goals:

  1. Help ITP students create a support network. SIC offers students an opportunity to hold office, to learn leadership skills, and participate in community endeavors as well as for socialization purposes.
  2. To educate the general public about the Deaf World in hopes of broadening peoples’ perspectives on Deaf culture.
  3. To improve the quality of the American Sign Language and Interpreting Training Programs at SCCC.
  4. To create a supportive community encompassing students in the first and second year of ITP, and students enrolled in ASL classes.
  5. Finally, to raise money for workshops, ITP graduation ceremony, and thank you gifts for the volunteer interpreting mentors.

During the first year, first-year students will establish their own SIC Board for their graduating class. This will be done at the beginning of Fall quarter of their first year. These students vote on and establish a Board consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 3-4 Helpers. Students who pay a membership fee become voting members of the club.  The previous year’s SIC Board will continue to be in charge of the club, but mentor the new first year Board officers. At the end of the Fall quarter, the new SIC Board will take over the club completely.

By becoming a member of the club each individual will be able to not only help promote the goals of this group, but get lower entrance fees into the workshops or other such events.

Fundraising may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Bake sale
  2. Food sales during SCCC workshops
  3. Car wash
  4. Auction
  5. Workshops
  6. Silent Games
  7. Athletic events such as a walk-a-thon
  8. Selling T-shirts etc.

The 1st year club members will take up the responsibility of arranging the graduation ceremony for the 2nd year ITP students. This will include the pinning ceremony itself and a celebration afterwards.
SIC board members will make available to all students ledgers of monies deposited with the SLO.

An ITP instructor is assigned as advisor of the Club. The instructor must approve any and all events planned by the SIC.

During the second year, the SIC board officers have 4 responsibilities:

  1. Visit the incoming (1st year) ITP class during the Fall quarter, to offer guidance in preparing to establish their own Board in the coming school quarter
  2. The 2nd year Board will mentor the 1st year SIC Board during the Fall quarter so that the new officers are ready for the responsibility of the club.
  3. To support the 1st years in fundraising events.
  4. Help organize the 2nd year Mock Interpreting schedule.
