ASL Teachers

See you in the Fall of 2009!

Welcome, ASL teachers from Western Washington!

If you would like for your students to have the opportunity to meet with our ASL/ITP students here at SCCC, either here for a tour, or to schedule a personal visit to your school, feel free to contact me at kroberts@sccd.ctc.edu. Us here at SCCC are pleased to work with you, to collaborate with you to improve our ASL/ITP program, student outreach efforts, and provide the support you teachers need!

Before you contact me, please do read the FAQ below, which might answer any questions you might have!

Can I request for students to visit my school?

I can arrange to send you two students (from ITP and/or Deaf Studies) to visit your class for up to an hour and a half.  They will arrive ready with a powerpoint presentation, handouts, and are available for a Q and A session for that class.

How do I request for students to visit my school?

You can look at the schedule (attached to this email) and pick a time slot that fits your program the best.  You may request for up to an hour and a half time slot.  Then you need to email your request in to me (Katie Roberts), along with the address of your school and contact information.

Now that I’ve sent in a request to for students to visit my school, what happens next?

Katie will post information on the bulletin board, and if any students are interested, they may sign up for that slot and contact Katie. If she has two students who have signed up for that time slot, she will contact you and arrange for those students to come by during the time slot you indicated.

Wait a minute! I know someone from the Deaf Studies / ITP program. I already asked them to come.   There is someone specific that I want to come.  What then?

If you already know someone, or have a specific request for a specific person, you still need to contact Katie to set up a visit during that specific time slot.  You are welcome to make arrangements with people you know, but you need final approval from Katie before proceeding with the plan.  Do keep in mind that it MUST be TWO STUDENTS at a time (we use a buddy system), so if it is done any other way, the students themselves won’t earn credit hours for doing this.

Why can it be difficult to schedule students?

It is up to you to determine what time during the day students can come by for a visit. However, some of them are not free until after 1 pm or so (but you can try!). Our priority here is for students to attend classes.  We do not wish for our students to be missing classes to do visits.  Our students also need some free time to focus on finals or other responsibilities they might have.

What if my time slot is not available? What if nobody has signed up?

You can give Katie an alternative time slot.  However, Katie cannot promise that students will be willing to visit your schools.  This is completely voluntary, and there is no guarantee someone will be available or interested in coming by your school.

I don’t want students to visit my school. I want my students to come over to SCCC and check it out for themselves!

You can contact Katie and asked about getting a guided tour of SCCC and the program set up.  You will need at least 6 students to get a formal “private” tour.  You still can bring a couple of students if you wish, just to stop by the program and meet some of the folks here, and use the public tour service we already have here for the college.
