The six-quarter Deaf Interpreter Training Certificate program prepares deaf individuals to work as interpreters for the deaf population with special needs and the deaf-blind population. The curriculum includes skills classes and practicum. This program begins once a year in fall quarter.
Students progress through the program by completing each technical specialty course in quarter sequence with a grade of 3.0 or better. Information on course sequencing is available in the Health & Human Services division office, room BE3210, or click here. For additional information on related programs, see the Interpreter Training (AAS-T) Degree Program.
Career Opportunities
The program is designed to prepare individuals to work as deaf interpreters in areas such as colleges, public schools or as freelance interpreters. The curriculum provides students a background that prepares them to enter work in human services areas such as vocational rehabilitation, early childhood education, and social and mental health agencies. Graduates may also find employment in theaters, libraries, companies, museums or any other public or private areas in which deaf and hearing people interact.
Professional Certification
Students enrolling in this program are encouraged to simultaneously complete an A.A. Degree in Deaf Studies as many courses overlap.
The Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (R.I.D) is requiring an A.A. degree by 2008 and a B.A. degree by 2012 to be eligible for national certification.
